HAVERFORD, Pa. - The fourth-seeded Haverford College women's lacrosse team (12-5) saw its postseason run halted by visiting fifth-seeded Dickinson (9-8) on Wednesday evening, falling 17-12 in the Centennial Conference First Round contest on Swan Field. The Red Devils began the game on a 9-1 scoring run, but Haverford was able to cut the advantage to just four at 10-6 entering the halftime intermission. Dickinson outscored the Fords by just one goal in the second half, but escaped with the five-goal win.
Dickinson started fast, grabbing the first six goals of the contest before Kate Sollee gave Haverford some momentum, stopping the run with a goal with 19:13 left in the first half. Sam Marmo then rattled off three straight for the Red Devils, putting the visitors up 9-1 but Haverford was undaunted in its pursuit. Allie Gibbonsscored off an assist Kate Sollee, cutting the lead to 9-2 with 16:03 to play. With just over 10 minutes left in regulation, Gibbons scored again, tallying her 32nd of the season off a feed from Julia Pascarella.
Sollee added an unassisted strike with 8:11 to play and Hailey Morris converted a free position with 23 seconds left in the first. Sollee notched a free-position goal to beat the first-half buzzer and Haverford found themselves down just four at 10-6 after 30 minutes of play. The two sides were both kept off the scoreboard for almost 10 minutes to begin the second half. Marmo scored for an 11-6 Dickinson lead and Erika Bloes capped a 3-0 run with a pair of goals as the Red Devils went ahead 13-6, prompting a Haverford timeout.
Pascarella and Gibbons each scored before Rina Rosnow teamed up with Julia Manetta for her 43rd goal of the season, trimming the Haverford deficit to just five goals at 14-9. Sarah Svetec and Gibbons each added late tallies for the hosts, but Bloes scored a goal for Dickinson with 2:20 remaining to effectively seal things for the Red Devils.
Senior defender Alyssa Sherman scored her first career goal in the final minute of the contest. Sherman also matched a game-high with four caused turnovers and added four ground balls in another solid defensive effort.
Haverford dominated the draw control battle, controlling 20 draws, a season-best output. Anna Meyers had eight of those draw controls, a career-best total, and also added a career-best three caused turnovers and six ground balls. Maeve Gaffney also grabbed five draw controls. Rachel Romens and Amelia Slade split time in net, with each making five saves.
