Stevens' Kowal Named Wrestler of the Week

Wrestler of the Week - January 16, 2017

A.J. Kowal, Jr, 197, Stevens Institute of Technology
Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton

Junior A.J. Kowal won the title at 197 Saturday at the annual Cornell Matman Invitational in Iowa. In a field that included five teams ranked in the top-25 nationally, Kowal won once my fall, once my technical fall, once by major, and twice by decision en route to the victory.

Zach Wilhelm,  Jr, 149, Stevens Institute of Technology
Tuckerton, N.J./Southern Regional

Junior Zach Wilhelm went a perfect 4-0 Saturday at the North/South Duals, keying the Ducks 4-0 day that included a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents. Wilhelm won three times by decision, while gaining his fourth win in an 18-0 tech. fall.

 

Wrestler of the Week - December 10, 2016

Colin Kowalski, Soph, 157, Gettysburg College
Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep

Kowalski improved to 16-2 with a 5-2 decision at 157 pounds in a dual with Lycoming. The sophomore trailed 2-0 entering the third period before pulling off an escape and the match-clinching takedown.


Wrestler of the Week - December 5, 2016

Troy Stanich, Fr, 133, Stevens
Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury

Freshman Troy Stanich won the title at 133 Saturday at the highly competitive York New Standard Invitational, which included 10 teams currently ranked in the top-25 nationally. Stanich won twice by fall and twice by major, before topping No. 4 Ryan Flynn of York 4-1 in the final. Stanich is ranked No. 2 at the weight class nationally.


Wrestler of the Week - November 21, 2016

Alvontae Drummond, Sr, McDaniel
Lincoln, Del./Milford

Drummond went 3-0 with three pins to lead McDaniel to a 2-1 day at the Green Terror Duals on Saturday. All three of his falls came in the first period.

Wrestler of the Week - November 14, 2016

Patrick Rooney, Sr, 184, Merchant Marine
Belgrade, Minn./Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa

Rooney went a perfect 4-0 to win the 184-pound bracket at the Roger Williams Invitational this past Saturday. He was named the Invite's Most Outstanding Wrestler. The 184-pound bracket was not easy, as it featured three nationally-ranked wrestlers. After earning a pin in his first bout of the day, Rooney rattled off three straight decisions to take the title, including an exciting buzzer-beating 10-8 victory over 175's National Champion last year, Ben Swarr of Messiah, in the semifinals. He then defeated Messiah's Victor DeFrance, 5-0, in the first-place match.

 

Wrestler of the Week - November 7, 2016

Alvontae Drummond, Sr, 141, McDaniel
Lincoln, Del./Milford

Drummond went 3-0 to win the 141-pound title at Messiah. He opened with a bye before recording a 7-5 win over Freddy Coradetti (Ursinus). He topped Matt Darok (Messiah) by technical fall 17-2 in the semifinals before winning the championship bout 5-3 over Lee Cassel (Messiah).
