CoSIDA Academic All-America Release
AUSTIN, Texas -- Johns Hopkins senior Toni Abate and Swarthmore senior Marin McCoy have been named to the Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America Team. Abate was a first-team selection while McCoy collected second team accolades.
The be nominated for the CoSIDA Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
Hopkins has now had 13 Academic All-Americans and Abate is the first to be named to the first team since 2011. The Wellesley, Mass. native is the fourth JHU women's soccer player to be named an Academic All-American multiple times. Last season Abate earned Third Team All-America honors as JHU has had at least one Academic All-American in three consecutive years. She is one of 12 repeat recipients on this year's team.
Abate sports a 3.93 GPA as a chemical and biomolecular engineering major and has secured a full-time job with Audax Private Equity as a Deal Team Analyst after interning there the last two summers. She has made the Dean's List in four-straight years and has made the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll the last three seasons. Abate was elected to the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honors Society and is a member of the Phi Mu Fraternity Academic Excellence Committee.
On the field, the senior captain started all 21 games and tallied one goal and three assists and was a key part of the JHU defense which allowed just 17 goals this season. Hopkins posted 11 shutouts this season and surrendered more than two goals only twice on the year while giving up just 86 shots on goal.
Swarthmore's McCoy, who recently earned First Team All-America recognition from the United Soccer Coaches, was a second-team Academic All-America choice. McCoy is a biology major from Denver, Colorado, who is a three-time All-American forward and the all-time leading scorer (149 pts, 57 goals, 35 assists) in Swarthmore history.
The 2017 Centennial Conference Player of the Year, McCoy led the conference with 35 points on 14 goals and seven assists this fall. Nine of her goals were game-winners. She registered a goal in both Centennial Conference Tournament games and was named the tournament's MVP. In the NCAA Tournament, McCoy dealt a pair of assists against St. Joseph's (Maine) and had a pair of goals against Virginia Wesleyan. The Garnet, ranked as high as 12th in the nation, finished 2018 with a 17-3-2 overall record, the Centennial Championship, and a pair of wins in the NCAA Tournament.
