F&M's Russo Named Player of the Week

Nicole Russo, Soph, Franklin & Marshall

Livingston, N.J. / Livingston

Nicole Russo went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles last week as Franklin & Marshall shutout McDaniel by a 9-0 score on Tuesday, and followed with a 7-2 win against Swarthmore on Saturday. Ranked No. 17 for singles in the Atlantic South region, the Diplomats' No. 1 rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 straight-set win against McDaniel and teamed with Dana Sleeper at No. 2 for the 8-0 shutout in doubles. Against the Garnet on Saturday, Russo earned another straight-set win at 6-2, 6-1 and once again teamed with Sleeper at No. 2 for the 8-2 win.

Emily Lutz, Fr, Gettysburg

Gettysburg freshman Emily Lutz went 3-0 last week at number five singles to lead the Bullets to a 2-1 week. Lutz was the Bullets’ lone victory against Swarthmore defeating Jackie Lane in a pro-set 9-7. Lutz is now 8-1 on the season.

Sara Finger, Soph, Muhlenberg

Finger won both of her singles matches at the top of the lineup to lead the Mules to a pair of come-from-behind Centennial Conference wins. After Muhlenberg was swept in doubles by regionally ranked Swarthmore, Finger's 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 singles win started a sweep of singles for a 6-3 win - only the Mules' second at Swarthmore in the last 25 years. The Mules trailed 2-1 after doubles vs. Gettysburg (with Finger contributing to the lone win) before winning five of six singles matches to again win 6-3. Finger was impressive in a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles.

Audrey Whitebloom, Senior, Ursinus

Whitebloom went 4-0 during the Bears 2-0 week, sweeping her matches in the #2 singles and #2 doubles slots. Last Monday against Alvernia, she was a 6-0, 6-2 winner in singles, while combining with freshman Ariel Danziger for an 8-1 win at second doubles. On Saturday, she and Danziger cruised to an 8-1 victory in their doubles match at Lebanon Valley. Whitebloom then rallied for a 4-6, 6-0, 10-4 singles win to help Ursinus to a 7-2 triumph. She now holds season records of 7-2 in singles and 7-1 in doubles to lead the Bears (8-1).

April Weaver, Junior, Washington College

Weaver went 2-0 at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles as the Shorewomen went 2-0 during their Spring Break trip to Tampa last week. In an 8-1 win against Daemen, Weaver cruised to a 6-1, 6-0, win in singles and teamed with junior Marielle McIntyre to record an 8-1 win in doubles. The next day, in a 7-2 win over Northwestern (Minn.), Weaver was involved in two tight matches. She and McIntyre pulled out a 9-8(4) win in doubles. She then rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 11-9, win in singles.

Maria Cuervo, Fr, Swarthmore

Cuervo was a double winner for the Garnet in a 8-1 win over Westminster (Pa.) on March 8. She teamed with Alli Wong for an 8-2 win at first doubles and had a convincing 6-3, 6-1victory at third singles.

Jody Law, Soph, Johns Hopkins

Law helped Johns Hopkins win its third straight ITA National Team Indoor Championship this past weekend as she went undefeated in singles and doubles. She clinched each of the three wins at fourth singles. She went a combined 5-0 on the weekend. Against Sewanee, Law won 8-0 at third doubles and then won in straight sets in singles. On Saturday versus Chicago, she came from behind to win in three sets at fourth singles. In the championship match, she and Megumi Chen won six of the final seven games to win 9-7 at third doubles. Law then won in straight sets, serving out the match, to win at fourth and clinch the title for Hopkins.
