Johns Hopkins Unanimous Choice in Women's Tennis Poll

LANCASTER, Pa. – Thirteen-time defending champion Johns Hopkins has been chosen as the unanimous favorite to repeat in the 2020 Centennial Conference Women's Tennis Preseason Poll. The Blue Jays secured all 10 possible first-place votes and 100 points to land atop the voting. 

Swarthmore, which finished as both the regular season and tournament runner-up last season, was projected to finish in second place with 91 points and the other first-place nod. Haverford (75), Franklin & Marshall (72), and Washington College (66) were projected to make the five-team CC Tournament, landing third through fifth, respectively. 

Dickinson earned sixth in the rankings with 47 points, Gettysburg and Ursinus tied for seventh with 42 points apiece, and Bryn Mawr (39), Muhlenberg (21) and McDaniel (10) rounded out the poll. 

Four CC teams begin their spring campaigns this weekend, with all 11 squads set to compete in matches by mid-March. Conference play commences on Saturday, March 21, with the CC Tournament set for April 29 and May 2-3.

Hopkins continued its championship winning streak last spring, defeating Swarthmore 5-0 in the CC title match to claim its unprecedented 13th consecutive conference crown. 

The Blue Jays went on to represent the Centennial in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the Sweet 16 with victories over Grove City and Mary Washington in the opening rounds before falling to Amherst, 5-0. JHU's Anjali Kashyap and Sophia Strickland qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship, while Kashyap also competed in the national singles tournament. 

Kashyap, who has earned back-to-back CC Player of the Year accolades in her first two seasons, is just the sixth player in confernece history to earn multiple POTY honors, and the first from Hopkins. The JHU junior headlines a crop of 17 players who return with all-conference awards throughout their careers. Joining Kashyap as returning All-CC standouts for the Blue Jays are sophomore Jessica Liang, senior Sophia Strickland, and junior Dhanya Asokumar. 

Swarthmore welcomes back a conference-leading six All-CC performers, including 2019 Rookie of the Year Sonia Varma, who enters her sophomore campaign. Senior Emma Kassan, who was the 2017 Rookie of the Year, has secured All-CC accolades each of her three seasons in the conference. Other returning all-stars for the Garnet include sophomore Christina Wang, senior Vivien Fernandez-Ravelo, junior Elise Talley, and sophomore Sophie Brown. 

Haverford, Ursinus, and Washington College welcome back two all-conference players apiece. Haverford returns seniors Emily Shutman and Clara Farrehi, Ursinus brings back sophomores Maddies Russell and Cara Freedman, and the Washington College duo of junior Ella Samer and sophomore Alisha White are back in the fold for the Shorewomen. Gettysburg senior Samantha Boardman returns as an All-CC performer for the Bullets.
