The New Year will bring another official change in the Gettysburg College athletic department as Leah Bernier will take over as the head coach of the Bullets’ volleyball program according to Director of Athletics David Wright.
Sixty-four athletes have been recognized for their actions on the court and the field as the 2010 Fall All-Centennial Sportsmanship team was released Wednesday.
Franklin & Marshall nearly battled back from a 2-1 deficit, but Randolph-Macon hung on to defeat the Diplomats, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 15-13, in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Candice Tussing led the Dips with 17 kills, while Sydney Seydel added 12. F&M closes the year at 22-7.
Franklin & Marshall, who won its first Centennial title in 10 years, placed two players on the first team as the 2010 All-Conference volleyball team was released today. The Diplomats were represented by senior setter Pam Horner and sophomore hitter Sydney Seydel. Haverford senior hitter Kelsey Cantwell was a unanimous first-team selection and was named Player of the Year.
Pam Horner had 42 assists and 15 digs to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 3-0 victory over Swarthmore in the Centennial Conference (CC) Volleyball Championship Sunday. The victory gives the Diplomats the conference's automatic qualifier bid in the NCAA Tournament. The title is the fifth in F&M history. The last one was won in 2000, head coach Mary Kate Boland's senior season.
Prior to the 2010 season, the Swarthmore volleyball team (18-10, 8-3 CC) hadn't defeated Gettysburg (16-14, 7-4 CC) in the 17-year existence of the Centennial Conference. With a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-21) victory Wednesday night from Tarble Pavilion in the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs, the Garnet would make it two victories over the Bullets in two weeks, as junior Genny Pezzola would led the way with 16 kills and 14 digs.
"Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team continued its winning streak with a 3-0 defeat over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) action. The Diplomats have won four straight without dropping a set. The win secures the third seed in the CC playoffs for the Diplomats (20-6, 8-2 CC) with a rematch against Johns Hopkins on Saturday."
"The Haverford College volleyball team's 3-1 Centennial Conference victory Wednesday night over host Swarthmore College clinched the regular season title, and assures the Fords they will have the chance to try for their fifth consecutive league tournament crown on their home court next weekend."
Haverford outside hitter Kelsey Cantwell has been named the Conference's Player of the Week for the week ending October 24. Cantwell helped the Fords to a 3-0 week with 40 kills, nine aces and 27 digs. She had match-highs with 15 kills in wins vs. Dickinson and Bryn Mawr.
