Bullets Make Quick Work of Falcons

GRANTHAM, Pa.   The Gettysburg College volleyball team kicked off a busy weekend with a quick 3-0 sweep of Messiah College Friday evening. 

With three matches total on tap Friday and Saturday, Gettysburg (19-5) made the most of its short trip up the road, dispatching Messiah (13-14) with scores of 25-23, 25-16, and 25-20. The Bullets racked up at least 14 kills in each set, including 16 in the final frame. 

Freshman Maddie Buerle (New Providence, N.J./Union Catholic) led the offense with a season-high 11 kills – five more than her previous season best. Sophomore Shannon Fletcher (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) racked up 10 kills and classmate Kasey Higgins (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) added nine. Senior Maddie Weikert (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) tallied eight kills and a team-high 17 digs. 

Freshman setter Brooke Newell (Sparks, Md./Notre Dame Prep) guided the offense with 37 assists and picked up nine digs. Senior Katherine Gilbert (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) put up 11 digs and sophomore Melissa Tringali (Cold spring, N.Y./Haldane) added eight digs.

 

Gettysburg heads to Swarthmore College on Saturday to face the host Garnet at noon and the University of Scranton at 2 p.m.
