Blue Jays Picked Atop Women's Cross Country Preseason Poll

LANCASTER, Pa. – Johns Hopkins was picked as the favorite in the 2022 Centennial Conference women’s cross country preseason poll. The 13-time defending Centennial Conference champions received all nine available first-place votes for a total of 81 points via balloting of the conference coaches. 

Dickinson garnered second in the voting with 71 points overall. Swarthmore (61) claimed third, while Haverford received a first-place vote with 56 points, and Ursinus (51) rounded out the top five. Sixth went to Franklin & Marshall (43), while Gettysburg (32) was slotted seventh, Muhlenberg (24) in eighth, Bryn Mawr (20) in ninth, and McDaniel (11) wrapped up the voting in tenth. 

The 2022 season begins on Thursday, Sept. 1 for five of the Centennial squads, with all 10 teams opening their seasons by Saturday, Sept. 3. The Centennial Conference Championship meet is set for Saturday, Oct. 29 at the Alumni Cross Country Course in Haverford, Pa., with Haverford College serving as host.

In 2021, Johns Hopkins not only captured the conference championship, but the Blue Jays also won their second-straight and seventh overall NCAA Women's Cross Country Championship.

The Blue Jays return All-Americans Alex Ross (2021 1st team All-CC, 2021 all-region) and Paloma Hancock (2021 1st team All-CC). The pair was a part of a history-making squad last season that tied SUNY-Cortland for the most championship titles in NCAA Division III history. 

Hopkins also brings back a trio of all-conference runners that includes Sara Stephenson (2021 2nd team All-CC, 2021 all-region), Sydney Friedel (2021 2nd team All-CC, 2021 all-region), and Katharine Priu (2019 CC Rookie of the Year, 2019 2nd team All-CC, 2019 all-region, 2021 2nd team All-CC, 2021 all-region,). 

The Centennial will also see the return of over ten runners with all-region honors, with Dickinson’s Sammy Jo Barnes, Madison Garber, Myra Naqvi, Swarthmore’s Catherine Crochunis-Brown, Alina Irvine, Rose Teszler, Ursinus’ Holly Chambers and Rachel Conhoff set for this fall.
