ALLENTOWN, PA - Playing away from home in the Centennial
Conference Tournament for the first time since 2005 did not seem to
bother Johns Hopkins, as it shut out Dickinson, 1-0, to claim its
fifth consecutive conference title on Sunday at Muhlenberg. The
Blue Jays win their fifth consecutive game, with all five wins
coming by shutout, and improve to 16-3-0. The Red Devils see their
four-game unbeaten streak come to an end as they fall to 15-4-1.
Hopkins was the second seed in the tournament and becomes the first
two seed to win the title since JHU turned the trick in 2005.
It was a tightly contested match as both goalies came up with six
first-half saves to send the teams into the half scoreless. Hopkins
finally broke through in the 70th minute as sophomore Paulina
Goodman (Sherman Oaks, CA/Van Nuys) scored just her second of the
season. Junior Jenn Paulucci (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Boro) played a
ball from about 40 yards out to senior Caitlin Moore (Landisville,
PA/Hempfield), who flicked it to Goodman at the top of the box. She
touched the ball forward towards the right endline and with a
defender on her, slotted a low shot under Kailyn Hartmann to give
JHU a 1-0 lead.
That would be all Hopkins would need as senior goalie Karen
Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) was forced to make
just one save over the final 20 minutes, a great grab on a header
by Hannah Richardson in the 84th minute. Guszkowski finished with
seven saves to post her third consecutive shutout and seventh on
the season. It also extends her shutout streak to 334:22
consecutive minutes. Guszkowski now boasts 28 career shutouts,
pushing her into second all-time in program history.
It was the 10th game in the last 13 meetings between Hopkins and
Dickinson that has been decided by one or fewer goals. In last
year's Centennial Conference final, the two played to penalty kicks
after 110 minutes of scoreless play. JHU prevailed, 4-2, in the
shootout.
The shutout is the seventh consecutive in the Centennial
Conference Tournament for the Blue Jays. Hopkins has not
surrendered a goal in the conference tournament since a 3-1 win
over Muhlenberg in the 2006 semifinals - a streak of 667:33. In
addition, JHU has not surrendered a goal in the conference title
game since a 4-3 loss to Gettysburg in the 2004 title game - a
streak of more than 470 minutes over six title games.
Hopkins has now won five straight and six overall Centennial
Conference Tournament title since the tournament's inception in
2001. Overall, JHU now has eight Centennial Conference
championships, the most of any other school as Gettysburg ranks
second with five.
Hopkins earns the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA
Tournament and will make its fifth straight and eighth overall
tournament appearance. JHU advanced to the Sweet 16 in the 2008
tournament, a program-best finish.
