LANCASTER, PA - Freshman Scott Bukoski (Sagamore, MA/Bourne)
scored two goals and tallied an assist as #18 Johns Hopkins claimed
its seventh Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Championship.
Hopkins defeated Gettysburg 4-1 in the title game at Franklin &
Marshall Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays (17-3-0) will now make its
11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
Hopkins got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead in the 15th
minute. Bukoski centered the ball to a wide-open freshman David
Drake (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) from the left touchline. Drake settled
the pass and fired it past Bullets' goalie Matt Langston for his
14th of the season. Gettysburg drew even in the 31st however,
capitalizing on a failed clear by the Blue Jays' defense. Geoff
Menge buried a pass from Chris Bayon to make it a 1-1 game.
Sophomore Max Venker (Oldsmar, FL/Palm Harbor University High)
scored what proved to be the gamewinner in the 63rd minute. Venker
was pulled down in the Bullets' box and converted the ensuing
penalty kick for his fourth of the season. Venker also scored the
gamewinner in the 2006 Centennial Conference title game.
Bukoski then scored the first of his two in the 71st minute,
giving the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead. Junior Matty Carlson (Bristol,
CT/Loomis Chaffee) played a long ball out of the Hopkins' defensive
zone to the top of the Gettysburg box. Langston came off his line
to challenge and Bukoski flicked the ball over him and into the
empty net. Bukoski closed out the scoring in the 89th minute, when
he split two defenders and fired a low shot past Langston for his
conference-best 19th goal of the season.
Sophomore Matt Mierley (Weston, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished
with three saves to earn the win. Langston finished with six saves
in the loss. Hopkins outshot Gettysburg 16-8 and had the edge in
corners 6-5. With 44 points on the season, Bukoski now ranks eighth
in Hopkins single-season history. He is also just five points shy
of Eric West's record of points by a freshman (49 • 1994).
This is Hopkins' seventh Centennial Conference title and second
consecutive (1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007). For the
Blue Jays, it is their first title in an odd-numbered year.
