BALTIMORE, MD - Senior Kim Lane's (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) goal in
the 59th minute helped lift the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team
to a 2-0 victory over Ursinus in the Centennial Conference
Championship game on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays (13-4-2)
became the first soccer team to win three consecutive Centennial
Conference titles and won their sixth Centennial Conference title
overall.
The two teams battled through a tightly contested first half as it
took till 12:46 into the game for either team to record any type of
statistic in the game. Hopkins went into the locker room at the
half holding a 5-2 advantage in shots.
Lane's goal in the second half got the Blue Jays on the board as
she took a direct kick from the top of the box. The goal was Lane's
seventh of the season and snapped a streak of 491:31 that Ursinus
had held opponents scoreless. The Blue Jays added to their lead in
the 85th minute as junior Molly Steele (Daleville, VA/North Cross)
knocked home her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Steele
broke free of two defenders from 20 yards out and hit one home just
inside the far left post.
Hopkins finished the game with a 15-2 advantage in shots while
Ursinus held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville, NJ/Cardinal McCarrick) made
one save in recording her seventh shutout of the season. Guszkowski
and the Blue Jay defense has now held opponents scoreless for 545
minutes of play. Ashley Potter made five saves for Ursinus in the
game.
Johns Hopkins will be making its third straight appearance in the
NCAA Tournament, having gained the automatic bid.
