BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's soccer team claimed
its fourth consecutive Centennial Conference championship to clinch
another NCAA Tournament berth after a penalty kick shootout.
Hopkins prevailed 4-2 over Dickinson in a shootout in the
Centennial finals. The Blue Jays are the only Centennial Conference
soccer team to ever win four-straight titles. Head coach Leo Weil
has led the Blue Jays to seven conference championships in his 17
seasons.
With a chance to win the game for Hopkins, freshman Paulina
Goodman was awarded a penalty kick at 65:47 after Courtney Anderson
from Dickinson committed a foul in the box and received a yellow
card. Goodman was unable to capitalize on the kick as Red Devil
goalkeeper Kailyn Hartmann made the save.
Dickinson held off Hopkins for 90 minutes to send the game to
overtime after the Blue Jays out-shot the Red Devils 18-6 in
regulation.
In the first overtime period, Hopkins had back-to-back corner
kicks, but was unable to score. Freshman Erica Suter had the only
chance for the Blue Jays in the second overtime at 105:25 but it
sailed high, forcing the eventual penalty kick shootout.
Senior Jane O'Connor made the first penalty kick for Hopkins,
followed by a misfire from Centennial Conference Player of the Year
Sarah Casey of Dickinson. Senior Lisa Irizarry scored on her chance
before Dickinson's Courtney Anderson notched the first point for
the Red Devils. With a 2-1 lead, junior Natalie Held hit her mark
to give Hopkins a 3-1 advantage. Dickinson's Ashley Kunkle made her
penalty kick to make it 3-2. Freshman Erica Suter's shot hit the
post, but Sarah Montminy of the Red Devils chance went wide to keep
the tally at 3-2. Freshman Molly Bralower tanked her penalty kick
past the Dickinson keeper inside the left post to capture a 4-2
advantage in the shootout and win the game for Hopkins.
Junior goalkeeper Karen Guszkowski made four saves in the game.
The 0-0 draw at the end of regulation give Guszkowski her 11th
shutout of the season to set a single-season record at Hopkins. She
has surpassed Kate Cushman (1997) for the most shutouts in a
season.
