The Muhlenberg wrestling team enjoyed a big day at Gettysburg, sweeping three Centennial Conference dual matches.
In defeating McDaniel (38-18), Gettysburg (29-19) and Washington and Lee (22-18), the 21st-ranked Mules (16-2, 4-0) ran their dual-meet winning streak to 10, one short of the school record set during the 2010-11 season. Their 16 overall wins are two away from the school record set last year.
A fast pin by senior
Scott Schaeffer at heavyweight in the final match capped the day. Muhlenberg trailed the Generals, 18-16, when Schaeffer
(pictured above) took to the mat against an opponent who had pinned him in last year's CC Championships. This time Schaeffer needed only 35 seconds to record the pin - the 28th of his career - and give the Mules the win.
Seniors
Austin Sherman and
Dylan Schwartz and sophomore
Luca Colestock all went 3-0, while Schaeffer and senior
Brian Jamison won both of their bouts. Schwartz improved to 19-1 on the season with a pin, technical fall and major decision.
Muhlenberg trailed McDaniel 18-12 midway through the first match before sweeping the five heaviest weight classes. Included in those wins was the school-record 20th career technical fall by senior
Jimmy Fratantoni.
The second match followed a similar pattern. Freshman
Jackson Karrat scored an impressive 9-4 decision against the 2019 CC runner-up at 141, but the Mules trailed Gettysburg 19-6 before a tech fall by Schwartz and back-to-back pins by Fratantoni and Colestock turned the match around.
Washington and Lee, which has been nationally ranked this season, took an 18-13 lead after an overtime win at 184 in a matchup of two wrestlers receiving honorable mention in the d3wrestle.com rankings. Colestock's 6-4 decision at 197 - his 24th win of the season against only one loss - set the stage for Schaeffer's heroics.
