SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Trailing the Alvernia University Golden Wolves for the majority of the game, Swarthmore College Men's Soccer got the jolt it needed in the 56th minute of Sunday's game with a Trevor Homstad goal. The goal evened the score and set the stage for Joe Barile's go-ahead goal in the 65th minute. Swarthmore held on for the 2-1 win, taking both games of the season-opening 22nd annual Garnet Alumni Classic.
Barile and Homstad, who both scored in Saturday's win as well, have combined for all five of Swarthmore's goals this season.
The Garnet avoided an early catastrophe when Alvernia was awarded an indirect kick from about three yards out. Swarthmore's wall denied the point blank shot after the restart to keep the game scoreless.
Alvernia capitalized on a restart in the 28th minute with the first goal of the game. Swarthmore didn't even the score until the 56th minute when Homstad collected a corner kick served into the box and flicked it in with a header.
Rejuvenated, Swarthmore took three shots over the next five minutes and found paydirt in the 65th minute. Charley Ward located Barile open and alone in the left side of the box. Barile got the Alvernia goalkeeper to dive the wrong way and then finished inside the right post.
Swarthmore out-shot Alvernia 14-9 in the contest. Senior goalkeeper Oliver Steinglass recorded two saves to get the win.
The Garnet return to action on Wednesday in a 7 p.m. home game with Widener University.
