Johns Hopkins Defeats Gettysburg and Loyola

• The Short Story: The 23-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team picked up a pair of wins and clinched the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament on Tuesday. Hopkins beat visiting Gettysburg, 9-0, and also defeated host Loyola, 4-3.
 
How it Happened • Gettysburg
 • The Blue Jays grabbed a quick 3-0 lead in the match with a sweep of the doubles. Sophomore Anjie Kashyap and senior Chrissy Simon beat Amanda Vinges and Samantha Boardman, 8-1, at first. Sophomore Margo Gerke and freshman Anya Gunewardena won 8-2 at second over Maria Martinovic and Maddie Class. And at third, senior Mika Inadomi and freshman Lillian Oliver needed just eight games to defeat Alexis Rinker and Shelby Deron.
• Hopkins then swept the singles matches to complete the shutout. Kashyap did not lose a game as she beat Martinovic at first singles. Simon won 6-1, 6-2 over Vinges at second and Gerke matched her score at third over Boardman.
• Gunewardena prevailed in a superbreaker over Class at fourth 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (3). Freshman Amanda Ruci equaled Kashyap's feat in her win over Rinker at fifth. Freshman Sophie Saland defeated Deron 6-0, 6-2 at sixth.
 
How it Happened • Loyola
• Hopkins swept the doubles to take the 1-0 lead heading into singles. Sophomore Dhanya Asokumar and senior Kimberly Zou won 6-1 over Kateri Martin and Abigail Thorton at first. Freshman Evelyn Chang and senior Katie Gauch were 6-4 winners over Lin Robertson and Alexandria Agee at second. Freshman Jessica Liang and junior Sophia Strickland did not lose a game as they beat Sandra Aguirre and Abby Decker at third
• The Blue Jays and the Greyhounds then split the singles matches as Hopkins grabbed the 4-3 win. Martin beat Strickland 6-1, 6-2 at first and Thorton took a 7-6 (1), 6-3 decision at second over Zou. Chang won 6-2, 6-2 at third over Decker.
• Asokumar defeated Robertson 6-3, 6-1 at fourth while Aguirre topped Liang 6-2, 7-6 (2) at fifth. Gauch closed out the match and clinched the win for the Blue Jays as she rallied to defeat Agee 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at sixth.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 19-15 all-time against Gettysburg and has won 18 straight in the series. The Blue Jays are now 15-9 against the Greyhounds as they snap a three-game losing streak in the series. Today's match was the first meeting between the two since October 15, 2003.
• JHU clinches the top seed in next week's Centennial Conference Tournament with one match to play in the regular season. The Blue Jays will host the tournament for the 13th straight year.
 
Up Next
• Hopkins will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 27 as the Blue Jays host the Washington College Shorewomen. The match is slated for a 1:00 pm start at the JHU Tennis Courts.
