GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Seniors
Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) and
Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) became Gettysburg College's winningest wrestling duo during a pair of Centennial Conference duals Saturday afternoon inside Bream Gym.
Coming into Saturday, Kowalski and Triandafilou were tied with
Jake Dell '98 and
Chris Clifford '98 for the most wins by classmates in program history with 203. Kowalski broke the standard with a dominating 21-3 technical fall at 174 pounds against Max Sims from the United States Merchant Marine Academy.
Kowalski and Triandafilou each added wins against Stevens Institute of Technology, the former winning by pin (1:37) and the latter by forfeit at heavyweight. Kowalski ran his record to 25-2 on the year and is just three wins shy of joining Triandafilou in the 100-win club. Triandafilou upped his season mark to 21-3 with his 109th career win. Combined, the duo has won 206 matches at Gettysburg.
Gettysburg (5-4, 0-2 CC) fell in both conference matches, dropping a 35-14 decision to Merchant Marine (5-4, 3-0 CC) and falling to Stevens (8-7, 2-0 CC) 28-26. The Mariners and Ducks both defeated McDaniel College (10-7, 0-2 CC) 34-10 and 31-18, respectively.
The Bullets fell behind early against Merchant Marine with a forfeit and pin. Sophomore
Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro South) ran off a 7-1 decision at 141 pounds and junior
Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) followed with his eighth pin (2:29) of the year at 149.
Following back-to-back major decisions by the Mariners, Kowalski closed the gap in the team scoring to 20-14 with his technical fall. Merchant Marine ran off victories in the final three bouts to secure the dual win.
Stevens jumped out to a 28-0 lead with three pins, a major decision, and a forfeit. Freshman
Mason Canonico (Kailua, Hawaii/Punahou) put the Bullets on the board with a 12-4 major decision. After Kowalski turned in his team-leading 12th pin, senior
Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) racked up a series of near-falls in the first period on the way to a 15-2 major decision over Robert Gennat at 184 pounds.
Junior
Austin Roskos (Lawrenceville, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) maneuvered Bruce Parola into a takedown and quickly converted a pin midway through the first period at 197 pounds. Triandafilou's forfeit set the final score at 28-26.
Gettysburg continues its Centennial dual schedule at McDaniel College Thursday at 7 p.m.
