BALTIMORE – Three Johns Hopkins University pitchers combined to limit Gettysburg College's offense to just six hits as the 11th-ranked Blue Jays recorded the first shutout of the Bullets this spring 15-0 at Babb Field Sunday.
Gettysburg's (13-11, 2-4 CC) offense came into the game averaging over seven runs per game, but the Bullets managed just one extra-base hit and five singles against Johns Hopkins (18-7, 4-2 CC). Blue Jay starter Matthew Dillard allowed only two base-runners to reach scoring position, the last being freshman
Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson) who doubled to lead off the fifth inning. Freshman
Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) followed with an infield single to third base, but Dillard escaped the jam with a double play to shortstop.
Junior
Ryan Augustus (Freehold, N.J./Princeton Day School) was the only Gettysburg player to reach scoring position over the final four innings after a two-out pinch-hit single in the seventh. Following another single by Seibert, Augustus was left at third on a fielder's choice to second base.
With the pitchers shutting down the Bullets at the plate, the Blue Jay bats touched up all five Gettysburg hurlers for at least one run and pounded out a total of 16 hits. Senior
Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) made it through two scoreless innings before a solo home run by Chris Festa in the third. A two-run shot by Austin Sacks pushed Johns Hopkins in front 3-0 after four innings.
Wortmann finished the day with four runs allowed over 4.1 innings of work. The hosts put up 11 runs over their final three plate appearances, highlighted by a three-run jack by Nathan Davis in the eighth.
Seibert was the lone Bullet with multiple hits, going 2-for-3. Johns Hopkins' clean-up hitters – Festa and Davis – combined to go 3-for-3 with two hit-by-pitches, one walk, three runs, and five RBI. Dillard earned the win with three hits and five strikeouts over five innings.
