Junior Austin Sherman came from behind in his final two bouts to win the 141-pound bracket at the Ned McGinley Invitational, highlighting a strong performance by the Muhlenberg wrestling team in its first tournament of the season.

The Mules tied for fifth with NYU in a strong field that included four teams that were ranked in the top 20 in the final poll of 2017-18. Of the 22 Mules who competed, 15 won at least one bout, and seven won more than one.

Sherman (pictured above) won his first three bouts on a technical fall and two decisions before running into trouble in his semifinal contest against a Wilkes wrestler. He trailed 6-2 with less than a minute to go in the third period before catching his opponent in a cradle and pinning him with 42 seconds left. 

Sherman faced a 4-1 deficit in the final against an NYU foe but came back with two third-period takedowns, the last with 17 seconds left, to secure his first career tournament championship. The win in the final was also the 50th of his career.

Senior Gennaro Cerminara placed third at 197, going 5-1 with his lone loss coming to the sixth-ranked wrestler in Division III. Cerminara, who set a school record with 18 pins last year, won three of his bouts by fall to move into a tie for second on the program's all-time list with 38 for his career.

Senior Jimmy Fratantoni won his first three bouts to reach the semifinals before dropping out for medical reasons. Two of Fratantoni's wins were by technical fall, giving him 10 for his career to tie the school record set by Jake Gordon last year.

Three Mule freshmen had impressive runs through the consolation bracket. At 133, Billy Moore won five straight bouts after dropping his opener to advance to the consolation semifinals. He could not wrestle any further, however, due to the rule that limits wrestlers to six bouts per day.

Freshman Greg Baum (149) dropped his first bout too, then won four in a row, and freshman Ronnie Grevera went 4-2 at 157. 

Junior Brian Jamison won three bouts, two by pin, at 157.
