Abboud Lifts Johns Hopkins Over Washington & Lee, 2-1

The Basics
• Score: #5 Johns Hopkins-2, Washington & Lee-1
• Records: JHU (1-0) • WLU (0-1)
• Location: Lexington, VA • W&L Turf Field
• The Short Story: Freshman Sadie Abboud picked a great time to score her first career goal – with 2:29 remaining in a tie game to lift fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 2-1 win over host Washington & Lee Friday night.

How it Happened
• The Blue Jays controlled play throughout the game, but it took until the 38:33-mark to get one past Generals' goalie Sara Amil. Abboud sent a pass from the baseline into the circle and sophomore Megan Abate banged it home for her first career goal.
• The lead lasted just 20 seconds however as Washington & Lee quickly countered to tie the score. Grace Weise passed the ball to the center of the circle and Grace Amaden punched it past senior Jodie Baris.
• It looked like Hopkins and Washington & Lee were headed for yet another overtime game in the series' history but Abboud had other ideas. On a Blue Jay counter attack, Abboud dribbled the ball into the Generals' end and snuck a shot past Amil from a tight angle on the right baseline.
• Washington & Lee came within inches of the equalizer with less than a minute to play, but Freddie Tobeason's shot went just wide.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 15-1 all-time against Washington & Lee, including 7-1 in Lexington. The last five games in the series have been decided by just one goal, including three overtime contests.
• The Blue Jays are now 3-0 in season openers under head coach Jane Wells.

Inside the Box Score
• Hopkins outshot Washington & Lee 20-6 and had a 9-3 advantage in corners.
• Baris finished with a pair of saves to earn the win while Amil made seven for the Generals.

Up Next
• Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 1 as the Blue Jays host Mary Washington. The non-conference contest is slated for an 11:00 am start at Homewood Field.
