Walk-Off Win Leads Softball To Sweep

Walk-Off Win Leads Softball To Sweep

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Ursinus College softball team swept both of its games on Thursday. The Bears came back from a run down to defeat DeSales, 2-1, before taking down Marywood, 5-1, in the second game.

Jennifer Hammons pitched a complete game against DeSales, allowing just one run and striking out three. Alexis Miller threw a complete game in the circle as well against Marywood, giving up two hits, while Anna Mefford brought in two RBI.

Game 1

The Bears' first game of the day against DeSales proved to be a defensive battle from the first pitch. Hammons retired three of the first four batters in the first inning while Ursinus went three up, three down.

Hammons left a runner stranded on third base in the second, forcing a fly-out to left. Amand Ladzinski led-off with a single in the bottom half, but the Bears were unable to bring her home.

The Bulldogs took advantage of a lead-off double and an error in the third to bring in a run to score and go up, 1-0. With a runner on second and two outs, DeSales attempted a steal, but Ally St. Jean threw a laser to third from behind the plate, leading to a run down situation and the Bears leaving the inning with just one run on the board.

The Bears finally got hot on the bats in the fourth. St. Jean singled up the middle and then a walk from Nicole Smith put runners on first and second. Mefford then singled to right-center to bring St. Jean home and tie the game at one run apiece.

Looking to match the success in the fourth, Mackenzie Brennan led-off with a single in the fifth and would advance to third. However, a fly-out with two outs on the board kept the game tied.

The Bulldogs put a runner in scoring position, looking to take the lead in the final inning, but Hammons forced a ground out and made the play to first and then a pop-up to St. Jean behind the plate retired the side.

The Bears got off to a quick start in the bottom half of the frame as Brennan led-off with another single. A sacrifice-bunt by Kayla McTamney would advance her to scoring position. With two outs on the board, St. Jean reached on an error by the first baseman and Brennan took advantage and came home for the walk-off, 2-1 win.

Game 2

The Bears looked to get off to a fast start in game two against Marywood, hoping for their first sweep of the week. Ursinus had split its previous four days of action. Back-to-back singles by Amanda Panati and Morgan Comfort did just that, bringing two runs in to score as the Bears took a quick 2-0 lead.

While it was the Bears offense that got off to a fast start, the story of the day would be Miller in the circle. The freshman pitched a near-flawless game, allowing just two hits.

The Pacers would go three up, three down in each of the first three innings before finally reaching base on a walk in the fourth. It wasn't until the sixth inning that Marywood finally made solid contact and got on base with a double.

The Bears bats were unable to string together hits in the meantime as the game remained tight throughout the contest. Finally, consecutive walks by Panati and Comfort put runners on first and second and then a Megan Hasulak single brought Comfort in to score to add some security.

Ursinus went scoreless in the sixth but got it going again in the final frame. With Delaney Baker and Gabby Ilyes on second and third, Mefford singled to bring both home as the Bears took a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Pacers put two runners on base with a single and then an error in the outfield, but a ground out to second an infield pop-up secured the sweep on the day.

The Bears will have two days off before concluding their trip to Florida against Bates and Wesleyan (Conn.).
