Field Hockey Fêtes Seniors In 2-0 Victory over Gettysburg

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College field hockey team (7-8, 4-4 CC) celebrated its senior class with a 2-0 home victory over Gettysburg (2-13, 0-8 CC) on Saturday as Dalia Bercow added a pair of goals on her Senior Day. The win helped keep the Fords right in the thick of the Centennial Conference postseason picture with one week left in the regular season.

Prior to the first pass, the Fords honored the senior class of  Olivia Ahart, Dalia Bercow, Rebecca Donahue, Sophie Frem, Anna Kirn, Delaney Snowden, and Lexie Streicher for their commitment and dedication to the program over four years on campus.

Haverford added a shot in just the third minute of action, with Anna Kirn testing Emilia Saccento with a shot on frame in the early goings. Mary Smith was called into action to make a save in the 7th minute of play, denying Hailey Rhine.

The Fords scored in the early gaaoings of the second period after Becow earned a penalty corner. The initial shot from Ahart was blocked, but Abigail Trapp collected the redirection and made a one-time pass to Bercow who registered the opening tally. The goal was Bercow's second of the season.

Haverford dominated possession from that point, with a pair of penalty corners leading to shots from Snowden and Ahart before another flurry just before the intermission with Ahart, Holly Vincent, and Snowden again tallying shots off corners from Rachel Marlin

Ahart put another salvo on frame to begin the third, and Kirn then fired wide. Smith was tested by an Andie Aloi shot on the other end, and Morgan Cherry then was off target with her shot in the 42nd minute.

Bercow scored on the second shot of the fourth quarter as the Fords took advantage of a flurry of activity in the circle. Trapp had her shot saved by the Gettysburg keeper, but the ball found its way to the stick of Snowden, who made a strong pass down low to Bercow, who buried her second of the contest.

Haverford was able to cruise from that point, with Smith tested twice down the stretch as Gettysburg put together one last rally in the final two minutes. Smith picked up her fifth shutout of the season and second in CC play, earning four saves.

The Fords held a 12-7 edge in shots, including an 8-2 edge in the first half, while holding a 6-4 edge in penalty corners, including a 5-2 edge in the first half.

Field Hockey has now won two consecutive contests with the Bullets after blanking Gettysburg by a 3-0 final last fall. The Fords have won six consecutive home matchups with the Bullets, including an overtime victory in 2018.

Haverford now returns to Centennial Conference play with a pair of huge matchups with playoff implications. The Fords face off with two teams they are tied with in the CC standings this week, taking on Ursinus (4-4 CC) at home Wednesday (7 p.m.) before traveling to Swarthmore (4-4 CC) for a showdown with the Garnet in a Hood Trophy rivalry contest at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
