Gettysburg beats Johns Hopkins in dual competition

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Sophomore Luke Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Saint John's College) and senior Ray Martin (Downingtown, Pa./West Chester Henderson) each went 3-0 against Centennial Conference opponents in the final duals of the regular season at McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon.

Match Highlights
  • Gettysburg jumped out to an early lead in the team scoring against Merchant Marine by winning four of the first six bouts. After a forfeit at 125, Kowalski scored a takedown and near-fall early in the first period against Cameron Pleninger at 133 pounds. The Mariner only mustered a reversal in the final period with Kowalski gaining the riding time point for a 7-2 win.
  • Junior Eric Mougalian (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) earned another victory with a hard-fought win over Austin Manning at 149 pounds. Mougalian scored the early takedown, but Manning tied the score with two escapes. In the third period, the Gettysburg grappler pulled off a reversal out of the down position and tacked on a final takedown after an escape by Manning. Mougalian scored the riding-time point to pick up the 7-3 win.
  • Martin rolled through Eric DeWald in his first victory of the day, posting a takedown and near-fall in the opening minute. After nearly pulling off a pin during the near-fall, Martin successfully put DeWald's back to the mat at 2:03.
  • Merchant Marine rallied for the win with pins in three of the final four matches.

The Mariners have won the last 14 matches with the Bullets and lead the all-time series 19-8.

Match Highlights
  • Gettysburg scored its first Centennial dual win with six wins against Johns Hopkins. The Bullets opened with a forfeit win at 125 and Kowalski made short work of Brent Lorin at 133, tossing the Blue Jay to the mat and posting a pin at 1:34.
  • Junior Jake Stein (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) scored a decision win over Erick Rocher at 141. Stein racked up a pair of takedowns in the opening period and then added one takedown in both the second and third frames. The junior totaled nearly four minutes of riding time in the 9-4 decision.
  • Mougalian rallied for the final six points in a 12-7 win over Justin Valdoria at 149. The two grapplers traded moves in the opening period, with the Gettysburg wrestler emerging from the first three minutes with a slim 6-5 lead. Valdoria pulled off a reversal to start the second period, but Mougalian countered with his own reversal to gain the scoring advantage. An escape and final takedown followed in the third period and nearly two minutes of riding time handed the Bullet junior a 12-7 win.
  • Martin did not allow Fritz Maurath an offensive opportunity in a 10-0 major decision at 165. The Gettysburg senior totaled three takedowns and three penalty points as a result of stalling on Maurath. Martin totaled 6:27 of riding time to close out the win.
 
The Series
Gettysburg improved to 33-22 in the all-time series with Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays had won the two prior meetings with the Bullets.

Match Highlights
  • The Bullets grabbed an early lead with wins by Kowalski and Stein. In the 133 match, Kowalski was in front of Ricky Caamano 5-3 after posting an escape in the third period. The Gettysburg wrestler managed to grab Caamano's head on a shoot and flipped the Mule grappler to his back for a pin with just 35 seconds remaining. Stein waged a back-and-forth battle with Chris Dalmau at 141 with the Bullet junior rallying with an escape and quick takedown in the final period. Stein tacked on more riding time following his final takedown to secure the eventual match-clinching point in the 9-8 decision.
  • Martin polished off his perfect day with a second-period pin against Ronald Grevers at 165. After jumping in front 6-0 in the first period, Martin scored an early takedown in the second frame and eventually worked his way to Grevers' side, all the while sliding the Mule grappler's right shoulder to the mat.
 
The Series
Muhlenberg scored its second-straight win over Gettysburg. The Bullets lead the all-time series 38-20.
 
By the Numbers
  • Martin improved to 26-5 overall with 12 pins this season. The senior has won his last 14 matches overall and is 10-0 at 165 pounds. Martin also continued his climb up Gettysburg's all-time pin list and now ranks fourth with 36, just behind Colin Devlin '20 (38) and Lenny Ogozalek '18 (37). Jake Dell '98 is the all-time leader with 50 career pins at Gettysburg.
  • Kowalaski improved to 23-5 overall with nine falls. Three of his losses have come against nationally-ranked wrestlers. Kowalski is 7-0 against Centennial opposition this season.
  • Both Stein and Mougalian evened their season records with two wins on Saturday. Stein moved to 11-11 at 141, while Mougalian improved to 14-14.
