LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee wrestling team suffered its first home defeat in nearly four years, falling to 18th-ranked Averett by a score of 32-10 on Wednesday evening at Doremus Gymnasium.
The Generals (7-5) last home loss occurred on January 27, 2018, when they dropped a 19-18 decision to Gettysburg.
Averett (19-6) seized control of the match early on, posting narrow victories at 184 pounds and 197 pounds for a 6-0 lead, and then took a 12-0 advantage with a win by fall at 285 pounds.
W&L crept back within 12-6 after junior
Riley Parker (Virginia Beach, Va. / First Colonial) notched a pin over Alexander Logsdon in 6:13, but the Cougars won three straight, including two by major decision, to push out to a 23-6 lead heading into the 157-pound match.
Junior
Ryan Luth (Milford, Conn. / Joseph A. Foran) improved to 19-1 on the season with a 10-1 major decision win over Jesse Alvarado at 157 pounds, but the Generals could not muster a comeback as they dropped the final two matches for the final margin.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Shenandoah for a 7:00 pm match.
