LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa.—Senior Vamsi Damerla sank a double eagle on the par-5 16th hole at The ACE Club on Tuesday afternoon and finished with medalist honors with a 73 (+1) on the day.
Damerla's 73 tied with two other players but he got top billing after a tie-breaker. The Garnet as a team were tied for first place (out of 13 teams) with Division II Felician University with 310s, but that tiebreaker went in Felician's favor.
On Damerla's masterful double eagle on 16, he crushed his drive 290 yards and landed on the fairway. He used his 3-wood on his second stroke and sank the shot from 252 yards out. Damerla said that he didn't see the shot land in the cup, but could hear people near the green cheering and that's how he found out that he nailed the extremely difficult shot.
Dan Altieri provided Swarthmore's second score, shooting a 77 to finish ninth overall.
Michael Brown tied for 13th by shooting a 79. Ankur Malik's 81 gave Swarthmore its fourth score and had him tied for 17th.
Hunter Hughes posted a 91 to tie for 55th.
Swarthmore now prepares for the three-round Centennial Conference Championship which begins on April 26.
