11th-ranked Blue Jays Slip by Bullets

Johns Hopkins holds on for 5-2 win over Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – No. 11 Johns Hopkins University picked up its final four runs in the seventh and eighth innings to get by Gettysburg College 5-2 in Centennial Conference baseball action at Kirchhoff Field Tuesday evening.

Gettysburg (11-10, 0-3 CC) struck first against Johns Hopkins' (17-5, 3-0 CC) ace Jack Bunting, picking up an unearned run in the second inning. After freshman Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson) reached base on a single up the middle, junior Ryan Augustus (Freehold, N.J./Princeton Day School) ripped a double down the left-field line. Decker advanced to third on the hit, but scampered home when the Blue Jays' shortstop threw the ball away chasing Augustus back to the second-base bag.

Junior Myles Burbank (Rye, N.Y./Rye) pitched well for the home team, stranding runners on the bases in each of the first four innings and posting two strikeouts. Johns Hopkins finally cracked the scoring column in the fifth with Tim Kutcher drawing a one-out walk and Mike Eberle doubling to right-center. Kutcher came home on a sacrifice fly by Chris DeGiacomo.

After allowing a two-out single to Matt Ritchie in the sixth, Burbank caught Ritchie leaning away from the bag with a quick pickoff move to first and the Bullets tracked down the Blue Jay runner at second base.

The visitors finally solved Burbank in the third, loading the bases with one out and getting a two-run double down the right-field line by DeGiacomo. Johns Hopkins scored another run on a bases loaded walk to go up 4-1.

Gettysburg recovered one run in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) and freshman Shane Manieri (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle) led off the inning with singles. Following a strikeout, Decker drove Bunting's pitch to left field to score Murphy. Jasper Carmichael relieved Bunting and retired the final two batters to leave two runners stranded.

A failed pickoff attempt set up the Blue Jays to score their final run as Kutcher knocked a single to right to push the lead to 5-2. Sophomore Dan Ball (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) closed out the final two frames for the Bullets, allowing three hits and striking out three.

Josh Hejka entered the game and threw one pitch in the eighth to strike out Murphy on a 1-2 count. After allowing a lead-off single to Manieri in the ninth, the Blue Jay hurler set down the final three batters to earn his third save of the season.

Decker finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI, while Manieri went 2-for-4. Junior Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) tallied one hit to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.

Bunting improved to 6-0 after allowing six hits, two runs (one earned), and striking out four over 6.1 innings. Kutcher finished 2-for-2 with a run, walk, and RBI, while Eberle, Ritchie, and AJ King all added two hits.
