Red-Hot Bullets Streak Past Gophers

No. 6 Gettysburg downs Goucher 22-6

GETTYSBURG, Pa. Eleven different players hit the back of the net as sixth-ranked Gettysburg College ran past Goucher College 22-6 in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on Tuesday.

With the game moving up a day to avoid the impending snowstorm scheduled for Wednesday, Gettysburg (2-0) put on a show in front of the home crowd, firing off 57 shot attempts and blowing the game open with a 11-0 run spanning the first and second half. It was the second time in three seasons the Bullets put up 22 goals on Goucher (0-1).

For the second consecutive game, junior Michael McCormick (Lorton, Va./Paul VI Catholic) paced the offense with a career-high tying five goals. He also dished out a pair of assists to top his personal best point total by one. Fellow Virginian and senior Andrew Garstka (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) dialed up three goals and two assists, while sophomore Brian Kolen (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) and freshman Elon Tuckman (Princeton, N.J./Princeton Day School) each recorded hat tricks.

Defensively, the Bullets forced 10 of Goucher's 20 turnovers in the second quarter. Junior Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) tallied six ground balls and two caused turnovers and sophomore Andrew Horn (Bronxville, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) picked up two ground balls and two caused turnovers to go along with his second goal of the season. Junior long-stick midfielder Christian Atalese (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) corralled four ground balls.

Gettysburg won 20-of-30 face-offs with sophomore Alex Ulrich (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) finishing 14-of-19 with six ground balls. Freshman Scott MacMillan (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) posted four saves before giving way to classmate Jonah Scher (Chevy Chase, Md./The Bullis School), who posted a pair of stops, in the final 10 minutes.

The Bullets wasted little time getting on the board as Harvey ripped the first tally into the cage just over a minute into the game. Kolen added another goal to make it 2-0.

Goucher kept it close and trailed 4-2 at the conclusion of the first quarter. A save by MacMillan and turnover by the Gophers set up the Gettysburg attack for a four-goal run over the next four minutes. Garstka accounted for two of the goals to push the advantage to 8-2 with 9:24 left in the first half.

The Gophers managed their only scoring run with two bouncing shots by James Russo and Andrew Sade finding their way to the goal. Gettysburg quickly regained momentum with McCormick scoring just 31 seconds to kick-start the big run. Three more goals crossed the line for a 12-4 lead at the break, and the good times kept rolling in the third quarter with six different Bullets lighting the lamp to push the advantage to 19-4.

Freshmen Griffin Gallagher (Ardmore, Pa./Shipley School) and Griffin Gelinas (Bronxville, N.Y./Brunswick School) scored the final two goals to polish off the win.

Gettysburg finished with the advantage in shots (57-30) and ground balls (39-25).

The Bullets head to No. 2 Salisbury University this Saturday at 1 p.m. The teams split their two meetings a year ago with Gettysburg winning 11-10 in double-overtime during the regular season and Salisbury winning 8-7 in the national semifinals.
