Bullets Sweep Western Connecticut State, Campo Reaches 600 Wins

Gettysburg piles up 23 runs in first victories of 2019

VERO BEACH, Fla. – Gettysburg broke out the bats on Monday, knocking 24 hits and scoring 23 runs on the way to a sweep of Western Connecticut State University in non-conference baseball action from historic Dodgertown on Monday.

Gettysburg (2-1) put up seven runs in the opening inning and held off a late rally by Western Connecticut (0-4) for a 14-10 victory in the first game. The win also marked the 600th for Head Coach John Campo, who is in his 33rd season at the helm. Campo's crew gave him win No. 601 in the nightcap, rallying from a 5-0 deficit to win 9-6.

The Bullets wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the opener with seven hits and three errors contributing to seven runs. Back-to-back doubles by sophomores Kobi Wolf (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Harry Quimby (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) scored a pair of runs and junior Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) plated the final tally with a single up the middle.

After going down in order in the second, Gettysburg scored two more runs on a big fly by sophomore Matt Szczesny (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) to left field. The lead grew to 14-0 with five more runs in the fourth, highlighted by two-run singles by sophomore Eric Raio (West Caldwell, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and junior Sinjin Smith (Nazareth, Pa./Mercersburg Academy).

Sophomore Myles Burbank (Rye, N.Y./Rye) blanked the Colonials over five innings of work, scattering six hits and striking out two. Western Connecticut State rallied with 10 runs in the final two innings before sophomore Sam Blanchard (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) shut the door with a pair of strikeouts for the final two outs.

Every starter posted a hit with Quimby finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and two RBI. Raio went 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI, while Giovinco also finished 2-for-5 with two runs. Gasparro picked up a pair of hits to go with a run and RBI.

Western Connecticut jumped out of the gate with five runs in its first two at bats in game two, including a two-run homer by Greg Campbell. Senior Sam Dobbins (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) entered the game in the top of the second and proceeded to hold the Colonials quiet over the next 4.1 innings, allowing just one run and three hits.

With Dobbins dealing, the Bullets answered Western Connecticut with five runs in the bottom of the second inning and two more in the third. Three of the runs were unearned as the result of two errors, while Quimby and Smith each posted two base hits and scored twice. Freshman Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) drove in a pair of runs with a single to right-center making it 7-5 at the end of the third.

Giovinco added some insurance with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to put Gettysburg in front 9-5. After relieving Dobbins with one out and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, sophomore Dan Ball (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) allowed a sacrifice fly before getting a fly out to left to end the game and pick up his first career save.

Giovinco went 2-for-4 with three RBI and Quimby produced a pair of extra-base hits while scoring two runs. Smith went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Seibert reached base three times on an error and two hits, scored two runs, and drove in two.
