Dickinson Rallies Past Gettysburg

Red Devils score twice in final minutes against Bullets

CARLISLE, Pa.Dickinson College scored a pair of goals in the final 2:10 to pull off a 2-1 victory over Gettysburg College and end the Bullets' hopes of a spot in the postseason.

Both Gettysburg (6-10, 3-7 CC) and Dickinson (6-11, 5-5 CC) needed a victory and a loss by Washington College to get into the Centennial Conference playoffs. The Red Devils clinched the spot with the win over the Bullets and the Shorewomen's 3-2 loss to Muhlenberg College on Saturday.

Gettysburg controlled much of the opening half, out-shooting the hosts 9-4 and taking three of the four penalty corners in the period. Junior Sam Nicol (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) kept Dickinson off the board with her team-best sixth defensive save on a shot by Bridget Fontaine 21:15 into the contest.

Less than seven minutes later, the Bullets jumped into scoring column as junior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) connected on her team-leading ninth goal of the campaign. Sophomore Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) picked up her fifth assist on the play.

The Bullets put seven shots on goal in the final period, but none made it into the cage as goalie Heather Meeder recorded five of her game-high 10 saves in the half. Jillian Beemon and Emily Mycek each added defensive saves to preserve the one-goal deficit.

The Red Devils captured the momentum in the final minutes. Sierra Bobb knocked in a loose ball in front of the cage with 2:10 left to tie the game and just 49 seconds later, Marie Laverdiere connected on the game-winning tally.

Gettysburg held a 17-7 lead in shots and a 7-2 edge in penalty corners.

Senior Brooke Matthews (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) closed out her career for the Bullets. Matthews appeared in 46 games as a defender and finished third in program history with 15 defensive saves.
