The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team drained a season-high 15 three-pointers in a 67-57 win over visiting York College Saturday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• Trailing by five with 13:53 to play after a Joe Polczynski layup, juniors
Joey Kern and
Conner Delaney hit back-to-back threes to put Hopkins up 43-42. The lead was short-lived however as David Giuliani answered with a bucket in the paint to grab the lead back for York. But consecutive three-pointers by sophomore
Braeden Johnson put the Blue Jays on top 49-44 with 11:38 to play. That turned out to be the 12
th and final lead change of the game.
• A Logan Collins free throw and a Darin Gordon layup pulled the Spartans back within two less than a minute later. Senior
Harry O'Neil hit a layup and then Kern followed with a bucket from downtown and just like that the lead was seven. A Kern steal led to a
Carson James triple and the lead grew to 10 with 7:03 to play.
• Polczynski answered with a three of his own, but a
Tom Quarry layup and another Kern triple pushed the lead to 12 at the 3:35-mark. The Spartans would get no closer than nine the rest of the way as they made just two field goals in the final three minutes.
• After an early Delaney drive and score, the Spartans got back-to-back threes from Giuliano and Polczynski to take a 6-2 lead. Kern answered with a bucket from downtown to ignite an 11-2 run that saw the Blue Jays take a 13-9 lead with 11:33 left in the half. York answered with an 8-3 run, fueled by a pair of three-pointers, to grab the lead back at 17-16 at the 8:24-mark.
• Quarry swung the lead back to Hopkins with another three-pointer, but Sean Kelly answered with one of his own on the other end. A Kern layup at 6:05 staked the Blue Jays to a 21-20 lead, but the Spartans answered with eight straight points to go up seven with 3:06 to go in the half. Hopkins closed the half on a 10-1 run however to take a 30-29 lead into the half.
• The Blue Jays picked up right where they left off, scoring the first five points of the second to push their lead to six. The Spartans answered with a 13-2 run, in a span of less than four minutes, to go up 42-37 at the 13:53-mark.  Â
Â
What it Means
• Hopkins earns its first win over York since 1987 and improves to 2-6 all-time against the Spartans.
• The Blue Jays are 4-0 to start the season for the second time under third-year head coach
Josh Loeffler. Â Â
Â
Inside the Box Score
• Kern led four Blue Jays in double figures with 20 points, going 7-of-11 from the field, including 6-of-9 from downtown. He also pulled six rebounds and grabbed five steals. Quarry punched up 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go with three assists.  Johnson finished with 13 points and Delaney added 10 points.
• Hopkins drained 15 three-pointers, the most ever in Goldfarb Gym and just one shy of the school single-game record. Coming into the game, York had allowed just 15 threes in four games this season. The 15 threes are the most allowed by the Spartans since January 31, 2018. Â
• Polczynski led York with 12 points while Giuliani added 11. Wagner finished with nine rebounds, nine points and eight assists to just miss a triple-double.  Â
