Birk Leads Johns Hopkins to 5-1 Win Over Bryn Mawr

The Basics
• Score: #8 Johns Hopkins-5, Bryn Mawr-0
• Records: JHU (5-2, 1-0 CC) • BMC (5-1, 0-1 CC)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: Sophomore Abby Birk had a hand in three goals to lead the eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 5-1 win over undefeated Bryn Mawr Saturday in both teams' Centennial Conference opener.

How it Happened
• Hopkins jumped on top of Bryn Mawr early, scoring a pair of goals in the first quarter. Birk put the home team on top midway through the quarter as the Blue Jays cashed in on a corner. She inserted the corner to senior Katie McErlean at the top of the circle. McErlean fired a hard shot at the Bryn Mawr goal and Birk tipped it in at the left post. With just 1:36 to play in the quarter, McErlean pushed the lead to two, scoring on a rocket of a shot off a Birk corner insert.
• Freshman Sadie Abboud staked Hopkins to a 3-0 lead with 1:20 to go in the second quarter when she dribbled into the circle and then hit a shot that went off the pads of Owls' goalie Maggie Titus and inside the bottom left corner.
• Birk got back in the scoring column just 4:16 into the third quarter when she banged home a pass from sophomore Bryn Rolon. Just two minutes later, Bryn Mawr got on the board after four straight penalty corners. Mary Cugini took a shot off the fourth corner that was stopped by sophomore Kaitlin Hall, but Meghan O'Shea batted the loose rebound into the cage to make it a 4-1 game.
• Hopkins answered quickly, pushing its lead back to four just 99 seconds later. Sophomore Maddie Brown-Scherer shot from the middle of the circle and freshman Tessa Erickson redirected it at the left post.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 26-0-1 all-time against Bryn Mawr and has won 24 straight in the series.
• It is the 38th win at Hopkins for head coach Jane Wells, who now sits alone in third place on the program's wins' list.
