Bears Offense Leads The Way Over McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Ursinus men's soccer team used a fast start in the first half to defeat McDaniel 3-2 on the road on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

With the win, the Bears improved to 10-6-1 overall and 5-4 in Centennial action as they wrapped up their 2021 regular season. The 10 wins were the most in a single-season for the Bears since the 1995 season when they went 10-8 overall. Meanwhile, the Green Terror fall to 4-11-1 overall and 1-8 in conference action.

After a couple of shots between the two teams went wide in the first 16 minutes, the Bears were awarded a penalty kick in the 19th minute after freshman Joshua Coster was fouled in the box. Senior Kevin Devlin beat the Green Terror goalkeeper lower right on the penalty kick and gave the Bears a 1-0 lead. Bears junior goalkeeper Tyler Lewin made his first save of the contest in the 25th minute, and Ursinus extended its lead to 2-0 just 40 seconds later when sophomore Tommy Mollis buried a long right cross from senior Jerry Bardol.

The Bears sent a pair of shots wide of the net in the opening minutes of the second half before the Green Terror got on the board in in the 60th minute to make it a 2-1 contest. However, Devlin responded 34 seconds later with his second goal of the game to put Ursinus back up two goals at 3-1. The frantic action continued four minutes later when the Green Terror scored again to cut the Bears lead down to 3-2 in the 65th minute. Ursinus was able to hold McDaniel from registering a shot on goal for the rest of the game and held on for the win.

Ursinus held a slight 9-8 advantage in total shots and a 6-4 edge in shots on goal. The Green Terror held a slight edge in corner kicks at 3-2. Lewin earned the win after making three saves in the full 90 minutes, while Green Terror goalkeeper Jonathan Mangione suffered the loss after making two saves in the full time.
