Women's Volleyball Defeats Medaille In Four-Match Opening Weekend

The Wells College women's volleyball team opened its 2019 season with four matches at Haverford College in Haverford, Pa. over the weekend. On Saturday, Aug. 31, Wells lost in three sets to Haverford and to Eastern. On Sunday, Sept. 1, Vassar defeated Wells 3-0 and then Wells defeated Medaille 3-1 and the Express picked up its first win of the season. Senior Jackie Allen was named to the all-tournament team for the Express.

Wells will travel to Kailua, Hawaii for four matches over Saturday and Sunday, Sept.  7 and 8 against Simpson College and Pacific University at the Pacific University Invitational.

Eastern 3, Wells 0

Set scores were 25-14, 25-23, 25-21. Jackie Allen had 10 kills. Wells hit .048 as a team with 24 kills and 19 errors. Jordan Stoops had 15 assists. Lorissa Parks served three aces, and Gabby Rivera had 16 digs.

Haverford 3, Wells 0

Set scores were 25-17, 25-14, 27-25. Jackie Allen had 10 of the 24 Wells kills in the match and Jordan Stoops had 16 assists. Gabby Rivera served two aces and added six digs. Allen has 12 digs and Nanako Otsuka added nine digs. Maritza Scharoun had a solo block.

Vassar 3, Wells 0

Vassar won two very close sets and took the match by set scores of 25-22, 25-16, 25-23. Wells served 14 aces in the match with four from Jackie Allen, three each for Jordan Stoops and Jazzmyne Williams, and two each from Makenzie Drown and Nanako Otsuka.

The Express got off to a good start with 11 kills and a .226 hitting percentage in the first set. For the match, Allen led Wells with 15 kills. Gabby Rivera had 10 digs and Nanako Otsuka added nine digs. Jordan Stoops had 11 assists and Lorissa Parks had nine assists. Williams had one solo block and two block assists.

Wells 3, Medaille 1

Wells picked up its first win of the season with a four-set victory over Medaille. Set scores were 25-22, 25-14, 18-25, 25-15. Wells hit .217 for the match with 54 kills against 23 errors. Jackie Allen had 25 kills for a career-best single-match total in that category. Jazzmyne Williams added 17 kills. Jordan Stoops had 47 assists, a career-best in that category.

The Express got 10 points via service aces with five from Nanako Otsuka, three from Jackie Allen, and two by Jazzmyne Williams. Gabby Rivera had a career-best 28 digs, Otsuka added 14 and Williams had 10.
