Field Hockey Downs Washington in CC Opener

Junior Julia Soares scores both goals in 2-1 victory

GETTYSBURG, Pa.Junior Julia Soares (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) continued her offensive explosion with two more goals as Gettysburg College took down Washington College 2-1 in its Centennial Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Soares scored a goal for the third consecutive game and has already topped her personal high with five goals this fall – all in the last three outings. With the teams scoreless through the first 57 minutes, the junior fielded an outlet pass from sophomore Emma Bertrando (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) on a breakaway and sped around the Washington (0-5, 0-1 CC) goalie for the game's first goal.

The Shorewomen were quick to answer as Kailyn Brandt knocked home a rebound less than two minutes later to tie the score. Just 48 seconds later, Gettysburg (4-1, 1-0 CC) leaped back on front as Soares rocketed a shot into the cage from the top of the arch following a penalty corner. Sophomore Grace Torrance (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) provided the assist on what would turn out to be the game-winning score.

The Bullets were held in check in the first half as all four shot attempts on goal were turned away with three saves by goalie Morgan Domanico and a defensive save by Abigail McGowan. Gettysburg's defense also held firm thanks to a defensive stop by Torrance in the 16th minute.

Junior Jillian Caputo (Haddon Township, N.J./Haddon Township) recorded all four of her saves in the opening 11 minutes of the second period to keep the game scoreless.

Gettysburg finished with the advantage in shots (15-12) and penalty corners (12-5).

The Bullets host McDaniel College on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m.
