Wrestling Upsets No. 18 Lycoming in Dr. Sam Case Duals

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Highlighted by two victories over nationally-ranked wrestlers by junior Jaedyn Harris, the McDaniel College wrestling team posted a 3-0 record in the Dr. Sam Case Duals Sunday in the Gill Center.

The Green Terror (4-0) began the day with a 24-19 victory over Lycoming (0-2) who is ranked at No. 18 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings.

With McDaniel holding an 18-13 lead after an injury default at 184 pounds, Harris sealed the win at 197 with a pin of Gable Crebs in 1:53. Crebs entered the match ranked at No. 5 nationally by the NWCA.

At 149 pounds, freshman Thomas Monn, who is ranked 13th nationally and fourth in the Mid-East Region, posted a 7-3 decision over Kobin Karper who is ranked fourth in the Southeast Region.

The win was the first of four-straight for the Green Terror who reeled off 15-straight points to take an 18-7 advantage. During the run, senior Alex LaVeck recorded his sixth win of the year and fifth by fall.

After a convincing 45-6 victory over Pitt-Bradford (0-3) where the team won nine out of 10 matches, including four by fall, one by tech fall and one by major decision, McDaniel battled Wilkes in a tightly contested matchup as both teams featured five regionally-ranked wrestlers and three who were nationally ranked.

The Colonels (2-3) jumped out to an 8-3 lead after major decisions by Austin Fashouer at 125 and Jack Bauer at 141. Fashouer is ranked 10th nationally and third in the Southeast Region while Bauer is fifth in the region.

However, led by Monn, LaVeck and sophomore Xavier Howard, the Green Terror won the next three matches to take a 16-8 lead following LaVeck's third fall of the day.

Wilkes' James Geiger, who is ranked second in the Southeast Region, escaped with a 4-3 decision at 174 pounds before Christopher Nuss posted a pin at 184 to put the Colonels back in front, 17-16.

Harris followed with his second victory of the day over a nationally-ranked wrestler, all but securing the win for McDaniel with a pin over Cameron Butka in overtime at 8:23. Butka is ranked 13th nationally and third in the Southeast Region.

Heading into the last match, Wilkes needed a fall to win. However, Caleb Burkhart, who is ranked fifth in the Southeast Region, registered a tech fall, tying the match at 22-22 and needing a tiebreaker to determine a winner.

By the virtue of the second tiebreaker (most falls, forfeits, defaults, disqualifications), the Green Terror were awarded the extra point as they had two falls compared to one for the Colonels.

McDaniel will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 3 when it travels to Elizabethtown for the Blue Jay Classic. Competition gets underway at 10 a.m.
