With the victory, the Bears close out their dual meet season with a 10-4 record and finish a perfect 5-0 in Centennial Conference duals, meanwhile the Mules fall to 11-10 overall and 1-1 in conference action. This marks the first time since the 2015-16 season that the Bears finished conference action with a perfect record.
The dual started at 184lbs as Nagle stepped to the mat for Ursinus, he secured the first takedown just over 30 seconds into match in route to a 7-1 decision over Muhlenberg's Ryan Fairchild. Nagle collected two takedowns in the first period with the earlier one being from a snap down and the second taking place with under 20 seconds remaining in the stanza after a single leg. He earned his third takedown of the match after a single leg shot and nearly collected near fall points but eventually gave the Bears an early 3-0 match lead.
At 197lbs, senior
Kyle Schaffer nearly earned a takedown in the closing seconds of the third period, but great defense from Muhlenberg's Angelo Mahaffey gave the visitors a 3-2 decision and tied the dual at three apiece.
Senior
Jake Ahmad electrified the Helfferich Hall crowd in the opening seconds of the 285lb bout. Ahmad recaptured the momentum for the Bears with a takedown within eight seconds of the match starting for an early 2-0 lead. After an escape from the Mules, Ahmad stretched his lead to three with his second takedown of the match. He chose bottom at the start of the second period and successfully completed a "granby roll" for a reversal and a five-point advantage. Muhlenberg's Ben Krauss was hit with multiple stall calls in the second period to extend the Bears advantage in seven at the start of the third period. Ahmad collected one last takedown in 40 seconds remaining in the match and after being awarded a riding time point, he extended the match score to 7-3 with a 11-1 major decision.
The 125lb bout featured returning NCAA qualifiers from a year ago as Muhlenberg's Joey Lamparelli ranks third in the Mideast region, while senior
Terry Adams is the second ranked 125-pounder in the Mideast region. In their third meeting over the last two seasons, Adams defeated Lamparelli with a 3-2 decision after an escape in the final period. Lamparelli tallied the first point of the match with an escape in the second period, but Adams would bounce back with a counter-attack double leg takedown at the 1:08-mark for a 2-1 advantage. The match entered the third stanza tied 2-2 after an escape from the Mules, but Adams collected an escape in the period for the decision to give Ursinus a 10-3 dual lead.
With the crowd behind the Bears, Ursinus would capture back-to-back decisions in the next two bouts as Junior
Jagger Clapsadle earned a 6-4 decision over Muhlenberg's Ricky Caamano at 133lbs, while senior
Romeo Rodriguez recorded a 3-1 decision over Chris Dalmau for the Mules at 141lbs.
With Ursinus leading the dual 16-3 with four matches to go, junior
Dante Monaco provided the statement and clinched the dual with a first period fall over Michael Ruane at the 1:24-mark. Monaco threw Ruane to his back with a headlock and after readjusting clinched the dual for Ursinus with the fall.
Each team received forfeits at the next two weight classes as Muhlenberg's Brandon Bowles (Ranked first in the Mideast region) collected the victory at 157lbs, while senior
Shawn Marchesano (Ranked second in the Mideast region) recorded the six free points at 165lbs to increase the Bears lead to 28-9. In the final bout, senior
Alex Koenig fell via a 13-6 decision at 174lbs resulting in the Bears 28-12 dual victory.
"Great win tonight in a fun environment," Director of Wrestling
Joe Jamison said. "The guys let it all hang out and wrestled well in just about every position up and down the lineup. It's been a while since we've gone undefeated in conference duals, but we still have some work to do next weekend at the conference championships."
Several members of the team will return to action on Saturday as they travel to the Messiah Open for a 10 a.m. start time. Ursinus will return to Helfferich Hall on February 11
th as they host the Centennial Conference Championships.
