Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls Late to Moravian

The Muhlenberg men's basketball team came back from a double-digit deficit to have a chance to win, but Moravian made the plays down the stretch to escape with a 79-75 victory.

Junior Matt Gnias scored a career-high 28 points for the Mules (5-5), who came in with a huge deficit in experience. The Greyhounds, who won 20 games and played in the NCAA Tournament last year, had 55.4 percent of their points scored by seniors, while the Mules had 58.4 percent of their points scored by freshmen.

Moravian led by as many as 10 points in the first half, but Muhlenberg cut the gap in half by the break and took the lead by scoring the first six points of the second half, on a three-pointer by freshman Dallas Hoffman and a three-point play by Gnias.

The Mules went up by nine points, 67-58, with 6:26 to play, but a 10-1 run by the Greyhounds (7-2) set the stage for an exciting finish. A layup by Gnias with 1:59 left produced the game's 13th tie, at 72-all. Moravian converted a three-point play on its ensuing possession to take the lead for good.

Muhlenberg had two possessions with a chance to tie the game but could not cash in, and the Greyhounds put the game away by making four free throws in the final minute.

Hoffman (pictured above) finished with 13 points. Freshman Dan Gaines also scored 13 and added 4 assists. Sophomore Spencer Duke came off the bench to contribute 7 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals.

The Mules did well in the face of Moravian's relentless pressure defense, committing only 14 turnovers against a team that came in forcing an average of more than 21 per game.
