Men's Swimming Earns Trio of Conference Wins in Dominant Opener

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore College men's swimming team returned to action with three conference dual meet victories at the Franklin & Marshall College Centennial Quad on Saturday.

The Garnet defeated the host Franklin & Marshall 174-87, bested Ursinus College 190-71 and blew past McDaniel College 219-30.

Swarthmore took first overall in 10 events. Ben Freeman and Dylan Ling paced the Garnet with two first place finishes. Freeman was victorious in the 200 and 500 freestyles, while Ling led the field in the 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley. 

Ben Wesley, AJ Das, Jacob Sherman and Cami Wilson also earned individual victories for the Garnet, while Swarthmore touched the wall first in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.



HOW IT HAPPENED
- Swarthmore captured the top-three spots in the 100 butterfly. Wilson led the pack with a 50.63 effort, while Jonathan Suh and Ethan Marotte followed with times of 52.92 and 53.05, respectively. 

- Ling captured his first collegiate victory in the 200 butterfly with a 1:58.13 mark. Mats McGrath also had a strong showing in the 200 butterfly with a 2:03.23 finish to place second. Ling then followed up his performance with a first place effort in the 200 individual medley at 2:02.65. The Garnet swept their second top-three of the afternoon as Ham Williams-Tracy and Omar Ebied rounded out the top spots with times of 2:02.69 and 2:03.19. 

- Freeman won the 200 freestyle with a 1:44.36 effort, while Luke Magnuson followed with a time of 1:47.27. Freeman then returned later in the afternoon with a first place performance in the 500 freestyle with a 4:51.14 effort. Finn Conaway also finished third in the 500 freestyle at 4:56.40.

- Wesley was victorious in the 100 breaststroke with a 59.41 finish, while Andrew Karpenko took third with a 59.90 effort. Karpenko also finished second in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:14.92 mark, while Ling was third at 2:15.19.

- Das led the field in the 100 freestyle with a 47.54 finish, while Wesley was third at 47.95. Fellow sophomore Sherman also earned a win in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:57.30.

- Conaway and Grant Himes placed second and third, respectively, in the 1000 freestyle. Conaway touched the wall at 10:04.83, while Himes followed at 10:31.44. Wilson and Sherman also finished second (53.54) and third (54.62), respectively, in the 100 backstroke.

- The 200 medley relay of Wilson, Karpenko, Marotte and Wesley opened the afternoon with a first place finish for the Garnet. The team finished with a time of 1:35.39 to narrowly beat out Franklin & Marshall. 

- Swarthmore also closed out the afternoon with the team of Wilson, Marrotte, Wesley and Cole Griscavage taking first overall in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:09.24 effort. The Garnet also took third in the event with their B relay of Benton Greenberg, Vijay Chhabra, Das and Freeman finishing at 3:11.90.
