CENTER VALLEY, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Cross Country raced to seventh place in the NCAA's Mideast Regional Championship on Saturday and had two runners named all-region.
Xiaojing Zeng and
Kenzie Himelein-Wachowiak cracked the top-35 to earn all-region honors.
The Garnet compiled a score of 276 finishing just behind Messiah (274) and a point in front of Elizabethtown (277).
As a team, the Garnet scorers averaged a time of 24:28 in the 6K race, and all five scorers came in at 85th place or better.
Himelein-Wachowiak and Zeng, seniors, finished faster than 24 minutes to earn all-region accolades. Himelein-Wachowiak came in 23rd place with a time of 23:50 and Zeng was just four seconds behind her, taking 30th place.
Junior
Phoebe Whiteside and sophomore
Emma Novak were neck-and-neck with each other. Whiteside held a nine second lead on Novak at the two-mile mark, but Novak nearly closed the gap by the finish line. Whiteside recorded a time of 24:46 for 68th and Novak was a second behind her for 70th place.
Rose Teszler appeared in Swarthmore's top-five as a freshman, recording a time of 25:02.
Swarthmore's sixth and seventh times came from junior Hannah Gutow and freshman Madeline Farber who crossed the finish line in 25:39 and 26:05, respectively.
The Garnet now wait to find out if any of their individual times are good enough to qualify for nationals.
