FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to knock off Gettysburg College 11-10 in spring break baseball action on Thursday.
Gettysburg (4-2) broke out to a 6-0 lead in the game with five runs in the first inning and another tally in the second. Junior
Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) provide the big blows in both frames, knocking a two-run double in the first and then hitting another two-bagger to drive in a run in the second.
Mount Saint Vincent (2-3) came around in the third inning, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs on four hits, two walks, and an error. The Dolphins took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run triple Steven Hansen that made it 8-6.
The Bullets cut the deficit with a run in the fifth, but Mount Saint Vincent answered with its own tally in the bottom of the sixth to maintain a two-run lead.
The top of the order sparked a rally for Gettysburg in the eighth inning. Lead-off hitter
Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) reached base for the third time in the game with a walk and both junior
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and freshman
Shane Manieri (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle College) reached to load the bases. Following a pop up to the infield, sophomore
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) belted a run-scoring single. The tying run came home on a fielder's choice and after filling the bases with a hit-by-pitch, sophomore
Eric Raio (West Caldwell, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was hit by another pitch to put Gettysburg in front 10-9.
Mount Saint Vincent threatened in the home half of the eighth, but senior
Will Wortmann (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) struck out Matt DiNorcia with runners on second and third to end the inning.
The Bullets went down in order in the top of the night, opening the door for a comeback for the Dolphins. Pinch-hitter Thomas Dunleavy led off with a double and Michael Grisanti drew a walk to start the frame. Eric Zimmerman stepped up and laced a grounder to second base that slipped by Gasaparro and allowed both runners to race home to close the game.
LaCoe and Seibert each went 3-for-4, the former posting one run and three RBI and the latter tallying one run and one RBI. Murphy and junior
Sinjin Smith (Nazareth, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) each tallied two base knocks and two RBI, while Gasparro recorded two hits and two runs.
Gettysburg faces Norwich University in a doubleheader Friday beginning at 11 a.m.
