The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins field hockey team got goals from three different scorers to defeat host Randolph-Macon, 3-0, on Monday night.
Â
How it Happened
• Hopkins wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as the Blue Jays cashed in on the game's first penalty corner just 74 seconds in. Freshman
Abby Birk inserted the corner, sending the ball to the near side of the circle, where classmate
Sarah Matyas lofted a shot over goalie
Gatlin Snyder.
• The Blue Jays continued to pressure the Yellow jackets goal, but Snyder made five saves and got a defensive save from Megan May to keep the score 1-0 at the half. Â
• Like the first half, Hopkins struck early in the second off a corner. Birk once again took the corner and this time it was sophomore
Michaela Corvi firing the shot. Snyder made the save, but Birk was there to put home the rebound and double the Blue Jays' lead just 4:07 into the half.
• Freshman
Maddie Brown-Scherer pushed Hopkins' lead to three with 1:39 to play when she scored off her own rebound.
Â
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 2-0 all-time against Randolph-Macon, with both games taking place in Ashland.
• The Blue Jays 6-1 record is their best start to the season since 2009, when they won seven of their first eight.
• Hopkins has posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season.
