#23 Garnet Cruise To Two Wins On Senior Day

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - No. 23-ranked Swarthmore College Baseball swept Gettysburg in two blowout wins at Clothier Field on Saturday.

The Garnet (19-11, 7-7) have now climbed into a tie with Muhlenberg and Ursinus for fifth in the Centennial Conference standings. All three teams trail Haverford by one game. Swarthmore has four games remaining on its schedule. The Garnet play first-place Johns Hopkins and second-place Dickinson two times each.

Swarthmore got these two wins on Senior Day as the team honored its class with the most wins in program history. The team has a 95-61-1 record with Zach Gonzalez, Charles Groppe, Ricky Conti, Jackson Roberts, Charles Levitt and Conor Elliott on the roster.

Game One: Swarthmore 13, Gettysburg 4

The Garnet opted to use an "opener" at the beginning of a game for the first this this season as sophomore Owen Webb pitched 1.1 innings and allowed just one unearned run. Gonzalez came on for 1.2 innings of work and allowed no runs and just one hit.

Usually a starting pitcher, Conti pitched six innings in relief and gave up one earned run with four strikeouts.

Swarthmore had 17 hits. Junior Michael Sepe and freshman Luke Mutz had three each to lead the team. Levitt, Elliott and juniors Holden Bridge, Cole Beeker and Jared Gillen had two hits apiece.

The Garnet scored five runs in the second inning and five more in the eighth.

Swarthmore's lone run in the sixth inning was Levitt's 17th career home run. He currently holds the program record and is tied with Roberts for the team lead this season with five. Roberts is second in Swarthmore history with 15 home runs.

Gillen and Elliott had three RBIs each.

Game Two: Swarthmore 9, Gettysburg 2

Seventh-year head coach Matt Midkiff went with an opener again in this one. Freshman Oliver Hicks pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, and freshman Drew McMahan threw one without allowing a run.

Typical-starter Sawyer Lake, a junior, pitched five innings and struck out five batters. He allowed two earned runs. Groppe closed the door with a one, two, three inning in the ninth.

Bridge, Levitt and Elliott had two more hits each in Game 2. Levitt, Roberts and Mutz all doubled.

Levitt stole three bases. He's second in the conference with 23 steals this year.

The Garnet had two more big rallies in this one as they scored three in the second inning and four in the fifth.

Swarthmore plays Hopkins in Baltimore on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. The Blue Jays come to Clothier Field on Friday for a game at 3:30 p.m.
