No. 12 Baseball Uses Defense to Force Elimination Game Against Johns Hopkins (Md.)

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The No. 12 nationally ranked and fifth-seeded Baldwin Wallace University baseball team forces an if necessary game three against Johns Hopkins (Md.) University with a 6-3 victory in the NCAA Division III College World Series on PG Cares Field inside Veterans Memorial Stadium.

BW (39-11) was led by sophomore right-handed pitcher Kade Swisher (Berea/Berea-Midpark) who threw his second complete game of the season only allowing three runs. Five different batters drove in a run while six different batters came around to score. Senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference utility Ryan Guggenheim (Solon) saved a run in the second inning as he threw out a runner at home. Senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate) made the play of the season as he made a game saving catch in the eighth inning.

Scoring Plays

  • The Yellow Jackets got on the board in the first inning with sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference Sean Kolenich (Parma/St. Edward) coming around to score on a wild pitch.
  • The BW offense continued the momentum into the second with a sacrifice fly from freshman infielder Matt Terzola (Uniontown/Archbishop Hoban) to make it 2-0 after two innings.
  • The Yellow Jackets got back on the board in the fifth with an RBI triple from senior All-OAC outfielder Vincent Capolupo (Kenmore, N.Y./Saint Joseph's Collegiate).
  • BW continued the hot hitting with a sacrifice fly from senior All-American first baseman Alexis Castillo (Sunrise, Fla./The Sagemont School).
  • Senior outfielder Andrew Parker (Toledo/Toledo Central Catholic) continued his great hitting at the College World Series with an RBI single to center.
  • Johns Hopkins (46-6) responded in the sixth inning with an RBI triple and RBI single to make it 5-2.
  • The Blue Jays added another run in the seventh off an RBI single.
  • The Yellow Jackets picked up an insurance run in the eighth courtesy of an RBI single from senior All-American Luke Vonderhaar (New Breman).
  • Capolupo made the play of the game in the eighth taking away extra bases from Johns Hopkins. With the bases loaded and two outs, Capolupo made an over the head catch as he crashed into the wall.

On the Mound

  • Swisher threw his second complete game of the season allowing three runs on nine hits across his nine innings pitched. He struck out six batters and allowed two walks.

BW and Johns Hopkins will square off again in a game three on Monday, June 5th. The winner will advance to the NCAA Division III College World Series Championship Series. First pitch is slated for 5:30 p.m. EST.
