The Muhlenberg wrestling team swept through four matches to win the championship at Scranton's Electric City Duals.
Â
The duals tournament championship was the second in as many years for the Mules, who captured their own Scotty Wood Duals last year.
Â
Senior
Jimmy Fratantoni went 4-0 on the day at 184, scoring two pins, a technical fall and a major decision. The tech fall gave him sole possession of the school record for careers techs (11).
Â
Fratantoni's record-breaking technical fall came in a 23-18 win against Oneonta, a team that tied for 10
th at the NCAA Championships last year. The match was not as close as the final score indicated; Muhlenberg had a 23-6 lead through eight bouts.
Â
Freshman
Billy Moore pinned his opponent in a seesaw 133-pound bout for the first of his three wins. Junior
Austin Sherman gave Muhlenberg the lead for good with a 6-2 decision at 149; he went 3-0 on the day to remain undefeated on the season at 8-0.
Â
Sherman's win was followed by decisions from juniors
Brian Jamison,
Dylan Schwartz and
Mike Cannon. Schwartz won on a takedown 19 seconds into overtime after regulation ended in a 1-1 tie.
Â
The Mules used their depth throughout the tournament, giving their younger wrestlers some experience. Freshman
Angelo Mahaffey went 3-0 at 157 and 165, winning by major decision in a 24-18 win against Lackawanna.
Â
Senior
Gennaro Cerminara also posted a major decision vs. Lackawanna for his 70th career win.
Â
Muhlenberg won seven consecutive bouts, including a major decision by Moore and the first of Fratantoni's two pins, in a 25-14 defeat of host Scranton. Last year, the Mules suffered a 27-6 loss to the Royals.
Â
Moore, Fratantoni and junior
Scott Schaeffer all posted first-period pins as Muhlenberg wrapped up the tournament title with a 48-10 win against Keystone.
