Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Duke Is King of Scotty Wood Tourney

Junior Spencer Duke beat the shot-clock buzzer with a three-pointer with 5.5 seconds left in regulation to lift the Muhlenberg men's basketball team to a 72-71 win against Neumann in the championship game of the Scotty Wood Tournament.

The dramatic win gave the Mules their first Scotty Wood title since 2016 and their first 6-0 start since the 1955-56 season - 64 years ago.

Muhlenberg let a 12-point second-half lead slip away and faced its biggest deficit, 67-60, with less than five minutes to play. Two defensive stops and back-to-back threes by Dan Gaines brought the Mules back to a 67-all tie at the two-minute mark.

It was 69-all in the final minute when Muhlenberg took possession following a missed three-pointer by the Knights (3-3). The Mules missed two shots but got the offensive rebound both times, first on a Duke tieup and then when senior Matt Gnias hustled into the corner to grab a loose ball and whip it back to a teammate with 25 seconds on the clock.

Muhlenberg could not get a good third attempt out of its third try, and after Gaines lost control of the ball while dribbling, Duke picked up the loose ball in front of the Mule bench and swished a three as the shot clock ran out.

The Mules fouled intentionally with 2.5 ticks on the clock. Neumann made both free throws, and time expired after Muhlenberg's inbounds pass into the frontcourt was deflected.

Duke finished with 14 points and 7 rebounds in the championship game and was named tournament MVP. Gaines scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half to earn a spot on the all-tournament team for the second year in a row. Freshman Justin Allen also earned all-tournament honors after scoring 27 points in the two weekend games.
