The Muhlenberg wrestling team closed out its dual-meet season by winning two of three in a home Centennial Conference quad.
The Mules (13-11, 3-2) defeated Johns Hopkins, 24-16, and McDaniel, 23-18, before falling to Merchant Marine, 31-18. They finished in a tie for second in the CC dual standings and will compete in the CC Championships at Ursinus next Saturday.
Sophomore
Anson Dewar posted the biggest win of the day, and freshman
Ben Krauss had the most dramatic.
Dewar took to the mat at 174 with Muhlenberg holding a 15-10 lead on the strength of a pin by junior
Joey Lamparelli at 125, a major decision by junior
Christopher Dalmau at 141 and a technical fall by sophomore
Brandon Bowles at 157.
Dewar's opponent was the defending CC champion at 174, who came in ranked third in the region and with only two losses to Division III 174-pounders all season. After a scoreless first period, Dewar chose down in the second period and needed only 16 seconds to escape. The Hopkins wrestler chose down for the third period, but Dewar rode him for the whole period. The 2-0 win kept Dewar undefeated against Division III opponents this season, with an overall mark he improved to 23-1 with his major decision against McDaniel.
Dewar's major gave the Mules a 17-12 lead against the Green Terror, who are tied for 24th in the Division III tournament rankings. Regionally ranked McDaniel wrestlers won the next two bouts on decisions, however, to put Muhlenberg into an 18-17 hole heading into the final bout.
Krauss, giving up 55 pounds to his McDaniel opponent, played the role of hero, recording a pin with 1:08 left in the first period to secure the Mules' 23-18 victory.
One of the key wins for Muhlenberg in the McDaniel match came at 165, where senior
Ronnie Grevera engaged in a back-and-forth bout. Grevera
(pictured above) entered the third period down 6-5 before escaping and recording a takedown to open up an 8-6 lead. His opponent responded with an escape and a takedown of his own, taking a 9-8 lead in the final half-minute. Grevera had a big riding time advantage, so the bout would have gone to overtime had Grevera remained down for the rest of the period. But he escaped with 11 seconds left, then took his opponent down to his back for a two-point near-fall just before time expired. The riding time point gave Grevera the 14-9 win.
The Mules wrestled mostly reserves in the Merchant Marine match, with both of their contested wins coming on pins. At 174, sophomore
Mike LaRosa pinned his opponent in the first period for his second CC win of the week. At 184, freshman
Ryan Fairchild trailed 4-0 late in the second period before reversing his opponent and pinning him. Fairchild also won by fall against Johns Hopkins and leads the team with 10 pins on the season.
Lamparelli went 3-0 on the day with an impressive 12-0 major decision against the fourth-ranked 125-pounder in the region. Bowles was 2-0 to remain undefeated (17-0) in duals for his career.Â
