Greyhounds Fall at King’s in Final Minute of 2021 Season Opener

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. --- The Moravian University football team had a 10-3 lead midway through the second quarter of its 2021 season opener at King's College; however, the Monarchs would kick the winning field goal with 59 seconds left in the game to earn a 13-10 non-conference win over the Greyhounds Saturday afternoon. 

How It Happened

  • The Monarchs would score the game's first points with a field goal during the first quarter to take a 3-0 lead with 4:35 on the clock
  • Moravian tied the score at 3-3 at the 10:25 mark of the second quarter when junior Trevor Yacuboski drilled a 39-yard attempt, the second longest field goal of his career
  • The Greyhounds took the lead on their next possession as senior quarterback Christopher Mills connected on a 74-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Trevor Cunningham. Yacuboski made it a 10-3 lead with the extra-point at the 8:32 mark
  • King's answered with its only touchdown of the afternoon just 2:23 before the intermission to tie the score at 10-10 heading into the locker room
  • Neither team would score again until the Monarchs made another field goal with just 59 seconds left in the game
  • Moravian had a chance to tie the score after Mills engineered a 10-play, 60-yard drive to get into field goal position. However, Yacuboski's 40-yard attempt on the last play of the game was blocked

Inside the Numbers

  • Mills completed 12-of-30 passes for 183 yards in the game as he surpassed 250 career completions
  • Cunningham caught two passes for 87 yards including his first career touchdown while senior wide receiver Nick Petros had four receptions for 69 yards including three catches for 60 yards on the last possession to set up the final field goal attempt
  • Petros also punted seven times for an average of 39.9 yards and a long of 50 yards
  • Sophomore running back Nate Boyle led the Greyhounds' rushing attack with 80 yards on 13 carries to go with three catches for four yards while senior running back Carrington Smith added 19 yards on 11 attempts and one reception for eight yards
  • Junior tight end Chris Carpini caught one pass for eight yard while junior tight end Ethan Deater had one reception for seven yards
  • Yacuboski would kick off four times on the afternoon, and he was also 1-for-3 on field goal attempts in the contest
  • Senior defensive back Romello Walters led the Moravian defense with eight tackles including six solo stops, a pass break-up and a forced fumble. Junior defensive lineman Javi Espinal-Katz contributed seven tackles with two and a half sacks while senior defensive back Justin McRae, senior linebacker Nicholas Azpeitia, senior defensive back Connor Lyon and senior linebacker Noah Breidinger each had six tackles with Azpeitia recovering a fumble and Breidinger recording a pass break-up
  • Sophomore linebacker Nick Levinski added five tackles and a sack while sophomore linebacker Colin Conway had four tackles and a half a sack and freshman defensive back Chad Newhard recorded three tackles and an interception for the Greyhounds
  • Junior linebacker Jack Gawlik had a sack and a pass break-up in the contest while junior defensive lineman Riley Brody and senior linebacker Francis Legreca each had a tackle for loss
