SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College baseball team came up short in a pair of Centennial Conference outings at No. 23 Swarthmore College, falling in the opening game 13-4 before suffering a 9-2 loss in the nightcap on Saturday.
Gettysburg (15-17, 4-10 CC) jumped on the board first in the opening game as freshman
Matthew Muir (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) reached on an error with one out in the second inning and came around to score on a single to left field by sophomore
Harry Quimby (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill) to put the Bullets in front 1-0.
The lead was short-lived as Swarthmore (19-11, 7-7 CC) brought across five runs on the strength of four singles in the bottom of the frame. Another fielding miscue set up the Bullets for three runs in the fourth inning with one come home on a double by junior
Ryan LaCoe (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) and another on a single by freshman
Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep).
Once again, the Garnet answered the call with a pair of runs to put their advantage at 7-4. Despite putting runners in scoring position in the next three innings, Gettysburg was unable to convert, leaving the bases loaded in the fifth and stranding runners at second base in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Swarthmore closed the game with a solo home run by Charles Levitt in the sixth inning followed by five runs in its final at bat in the eighth.
LaCoe finished 2-for-5 with a run and RBI and freshman
Shane Manieri (Harleysville, Pa./La Salle) went 2-for-3 with a walk for Gettysburg.
The Garnet jumped out of the gate in the second game with runs in four of the first five innings. Levitt smacked a two-run double to make it 4-0 after two innings and Swarthmore scored an unearned run in the fifth. The hosts picked up two walks and two singles to bring across two more runs before a two-run double by Luke Mutz made the score 9-0 after five frames.
Sophomore
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) extended his on-base streak to 37 games with an RBI double in the sixth inning and he added a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to close out the scoring in game two.
LaCoe went 3-for-4 with a run and Muir and freshman
Andrew Decker (Baltimore, Md./Towson) each tallied two hits in game two. Freshman
Nathan Masteralexis (Amherst, Mass./Northfield) and junior
John Braun (Ambler, Pa./La Salle) combined for three scoreless innings of relief to close the game.
