Late Free Throws Lift Washington College over Johns Hopkins

Johnson Punches Up Career High 20 Points

The Basics
• Score: Washington College-82, Johns Hopkins-80
• Records: JHU (13-6, 10-2 CC) • WC (9-10, 5-7 CC)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Goldfarb Gym
• The Short Story: Barry McCormick hit two free throws with two seconds left to lift visiting Washington College to an 82-80 win over the Johns Hopkins men's basketball team Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
• With the game tied at 80 and time winding down, McCormick drove into the lane and was fouled with just two seconds left. Junior Harry O'Neil's three-quarters court heave as time expired missed the mark.
• The ending was befitting the previous 39 minutes and 58 seconds as there were 12 ties and six lead changes. Trailing 11-8 early, senior Joey Fitzpatrick drained a three-pointer to tie the game and spark a 9-2 run that gave Hopkins a 17-13 lead. Freshman Braeden Johnson capped the run with a bucket from downtown, his third of the opening seven minutes. Following a Daniel Brown layup, senior Noah Ralby hit another triple and the Blue Jays led 20-15 with 12:02 to go in the half.
• Cole Storm and Ralby traded threes on back-to-back possessions and it was still a five-point game 69 seconds later. Josh Porteous answered with a three on the ensuing possession to kick-start a 9-4 burst that saw the Shoremen tie the game on a Porteous jumper at 8:29.
• Gardner ended the run with a bucket from downtown to spark a 15-7 run, that was capped by back-to-back threes from freshman Alex Schachne, and the Blue Jays led 42-34 at the 4:35-mark. The Shoremen kept chipping away and outscored the Jays, 11-3, over the final 4:17 to make it a 45-45 game at the break.
• The teams traded scoring possessions over the opening five minutes and the two were tied at 50. Consecutive baskets from Alec Lewis and Logan Bunch ignited a 12-4 run that saw Washington College go up 62-54 with 10:26 to play. Six different players scored for the Shoremen during the run.
• Hopkins sliced the deficit to three on a Johnson layup and Gardner three-pointer just 59 seconds later. The teams then went back to trading scores and the Blue Jays trailed by five at the 6:07-mark. Another three from Gardner and a steal and score by sophomore Joey Kern made it 74-all.
• With the game tied at 78 and 54 seconds to play, senior Daniel Vila hit one of two from the line to give Hopkins its first lead since 1:47 in the first half. Lewis grabbed the lead back for Washington College with a jumper on the other end. Vila tied the game with a free throw on the ensuing possession, but McCormick was able to win it with his two shots.
