Johns Hopkins Blanks FDU-Florham, 4-0, in NCAA Second Round

Post-Game Interview

The Basics

• Score: #9 Johns Hopkins-4, FDU-Florham-0
• Records: JHU (18-2) • FDUF (18-5)
• Location: Grantham, PA • Anderson Field
• The Short Story: The ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team scored three goals in the game's opening 28 minutes en route to a 4-0 win over FDU-Florham in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Hopkins struck early, getting what proved to be the game-winner just 5:49 into the game. Sophomore Michaela Corvi dribbled into the Devils' circle and then centered the ball to freshman Izzy Thompson, who banged it in from the doorstep.
• Just over eight minutes later, the Blue Jays grabbed a 2-0 lead off one of their 12 penalty corners on the day. Freshman Abby Birk inserted the corner, sending the ball up top to junior Katie McErlean. She took a couple of touches and blasted a shot from about eight yards out that beat Samantha Rubin.
• Corvi got in the scoring column at the 27:49-mark as she pushed the Blue Jays' lead to three. She took a long pass from McErlean, dribbled around several defenders and then fired a low, hard shot from just inside the circle.
• Hopkins added one more with under two minutes to play to wrap up the win. Senior Megan Ophel dribbled towards the end line and then sent a pass across the mouth of the goal, where freshman Alyse Tran redirected it at the far post.

What it Means
• Hopkins earns its 18th win of the season, breaking the program record for wins set by the 1999 and 2000 squads. It is also the Blue Jays' first NCAA Tournament win since 2003 and sends them to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second time in program history and first since 1999.
• Hopkins improves to 2-0 all-time against FDU-Florham in the first meeting between the two since 2007.

Inside the Box Score

• Thompson's goal was her team-leading 13th of the season and her fourth game-winner.
• Junior Jodie Baris made four saves to earn the shutout, her 10th of the season. Her 10 shutouts are tied for the second most in school single-season history and are two shy of the record.
• Hopkins outshot FDU-Florham, 16-8, and had a 12-7 advantage in corners.
