FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The pitching staff allowed just 10 hits and the bats took advantage of fielding miscues in both games as Gettysburg College locked up a pair of victories over Marywood University Tuesday afternoon.
Freshman
Nathan Masteralexis (Amherst, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) and junior
Jack Havard (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) combined on a four-hitter for Gettysburg (4-1) in a 6-1 victory in the opening game against Marywood (0-6). In the nightcap, sophomore
Dan Ball (Bernardsville, N.J./Bernards) allowed only one earned run in four innings and freshman
Timothy Fay (Easthampton, Mass./Williston Northampton) twirled three shutout innings for the save in a 7-2 decision.
Gettysburg made the most of its scoring opportunities in the series and tallied seven unearned runs on three Marywood errors in the sweep.
Making his first collegiate start, Masteralexis worked into a bases-loaded jam after an error, hit-by-pitch, and walk to start the game. After fanning clean-up hitter Bubba Klein, the first-year pitcher induced a double play to end the threat. The Pacers managed to plate their only run in the top of the second inning, but Masteralexis settled in and allowed just two more hits over his final three innings of work.
The Bullets put up four runs in the bottom of the third with sophomores
Eric Raio (West Caldwell, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and
Collin Short (Chesterfield, Va./Benedictine College Prep) each rapping RBI singles. Two innings later, junior
Sinjin Smith (Nazareth, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) and Short posted back-to-back run-scoring singles to set the final score.
Havard set down the side in the final two innings to close the victory.
Sophomore
Sean Murphy (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) went 2-for-4 with two runs, while Short finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Junior
Joe Giovinco (Stirling, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) added a pair of singles.
Gettysburg struck early in game two with all of its run production coming in the first two innings. Freshman
Mark Seibert (Yardley, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) led the charge with two RBI singles in the first two frames, while lead-off hitter
Dominick Gasparro (Clarksburg, N.J./Princeton Day School) drew a pair of walks and scored two runs.
That was more than enough room for Ball to work with from the mound. The sophomore surrendered an unearned run on a passed ball in the second inning, but escaped more damage by fanning Michael Tempel with runners on second and third. The Pacers added one more run on a double by Morgan Theobald in the fourth.
Fay made the most of his collegiate debut, scattering three hits and striking out one in his three innings of work on the way to the save.
Seibert reached base four times with two singles, a triple, and a hit-by-pitch. He finished with two RBI. Quimby plated a pair of runs and scored twice.
Gettysburg has tomorrow off before a nine-inning contest with Mount Saint Vincent College Thursday at 10 a.m.
